Can MRI detect particles of internal bra mesh?

Hi, I am considering to do breast lift with internal bra. I understand that some doctors prefers the use of a mesh. Is it safe? Also, if placed in can a MRI scan produce detailed images of it? Thank you

Your question is a good one. As far as we know it is safe. But I’ve been around long enough to see things that were felt to be fine cause problems later on. Will this be one of them? Nobody knows, even if they claim to.

The material used to make Galaflex mesh is a biocompatible compound called p4hb, which dissolves over about 12-15 months and is replaced by your own tissue. It is not a permanent mesh. In the clinical trial for mastopexy we did ultrasound and mammograms on all of the patients and the mesh didn't pose any difficulties in seeing the breast tissue. Likely all you would see on MRI after a year or two is a thin layer of tissue.

my preferred lift is a lollipop lift when a periareolar won't do (ie greater than 2cm lift required). The lollipop technique was created by a Canadian plastic surgeon named Elizabeth Hall-Findley and treats the breast as a three dimensional structure instead of two dimensions (anchor - lift). Most importantly it does not require the horizontal component scars that the anchor-lift requires and breasts appear much more natural, lifted, and less boxy. Lastly, the lift lasts longer because the lollipop doesn't rely on the skin to hold the breast up, its actually breast tissue thats being brought together to support the breast and hence improves longevity. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

Most of us use mesh that is made out of the same material as some sutures and will slowly absorb over about 18 months. The mesh is thin and when properly placed will probably not show up on an MRI.
