Would a chin implant or jaw surgery be the better option for me? (photos)

Question

I had orthodontic work when I was 11-15 which included a metal device (maybe Herbst appliance) that pulled my jaw forward and moved some teeth around, then I had braces to straighten them. I still have quite a large overbite, but it doesn't affect my teeth or jaw my only issue is aesthetically I don't like my weak chin. Would I be eligible for a chin implant considering my overbite? Or would my better option be jaw surgery?

Hello and thank you for your question. A formal evaluation would be needed to determine the best treatment. There are both surgical and non-surgical options to correct this.

We can place a chin implant, which is a quick surgical procedure. Many of my patients try to avoid surgery, however, so for those patients, we also offer non-surgical chin augmentation with injectable fillers. Fillers like Radiesse, Voluma, BellaFill, and Sculptra are injected into the area to improve the overall appearance of the lower face and balance the jaw and lip harmony. We use cannula injections to meticulously contour and project the chin, soften the chin along the jawline, and improve the chin crease.

Implants are a great option once you are ready for permanent chin enhancement.​ I suggest getting a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dermatologist and facial sculpting expert, or an aesthetic facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Donald Groves; we are both located right here in Los Angeles.

The jaw surgery would be better to advance your mandible and correct the overbite.  The less invasive technique would be the chin implant but that might not correct the overbite.

Augmenting your chin seems like an appropriate procedure. Chin implants versus sliding genioplasty are both good options. Each procedure has certain advantages and disadvantages. Consider consulting with both plastic surgeons and oral surgeons in your community.
From my experience, oral surgeons tend to lean more towards the sliding genioplasty while plastic surgeons seem to prefer implants, but this is not universal.
Consulting with providers who have formal craniofacial surgery background maybe of some advantage.
