Is a swollen lump around dermal filler injection site normal after 3 months?

Had Restalyne to under eye troughs and nasolabial folds in january. I had zero complications at the time. Now 3 months later, I have this swollen little cyst-like reddened area under one eye that resembles a bug bite. Is this a delayed hardening of the filler or scar tissue? Should I get it injected to dissolve the filler?

Hi Betty.A hard lump with a delayed presentation 3 months after the injection is not normal! I suggest you have an evaluation with your injector. This could be a delayed biofilm infection. Antibiotics and dissolving that part of the product would be the most reasonable approach.Best wishes, Dr. ALDO :)

Please be seen by your injector.  For issues like these, I like to dissolve the hyaluronic acid filler.  If the problem immediately resolves, they you have your answer.  If enzyme treatment does not remove the bump, then it is something else.

However, I do recommend having this examined by your injector to rule out an

Treatment of bumps following Restylane injections is usually quite easy.  The lumps may be dissolved with hyaluronidase or sometime local massage to flatten them out.  Some bumps require antibiotics or anti inflammatory agents to resolve.

Though I can see the area of concern, it's difficult to accurately assess this skin change from photos only.  If this area of skin has been clear for 3 months after the injection and only just recently became red and swollen, it would be rather unlikely, in my opinion, for this to be caused by your Restylane injection.  I recommend you contact your Dermatologist for an in-person exam.  Palpating this area would be helpful in determining what the cause is.
