Lips tender 10 days after lip injections.

Question

Hello, I got my lips injected with one syringe of restylane 10 days ago. I had some swelling immediatley and they bled during the process however I had no bruises. I am now on day 10 and they stil feel tender. a little bit swollen and stiff. Is this normal? I feel like I look weird when I talk.

Bruising and swelling is normal, you might be someone who is very sensitive and is taking a bit longer to recover. I would suggest scheduling a follow up appointment with your injector to see ensure you're healing correctly Kenneth Hughes MD

It is quite common to have some tenderness to the lips after injections, even for a week or so after the procedure. It is possible that any deep bruising would cause more significant swelling or tenderness that might last even more than a week. This tenderness may also be associated with swelling and stiffness. As long as these symptoms are getting better rather than worse, then things are probably heading in the right direction, but it is best to discuss them with your injector. A board-certified physician injector is always recommended.

It is normal to have swelling in the lips for 2-3 weeks after the injection. If the swelling persists after that make sure to see your injector to have your lips assessed.

Just injecting the lips causes a small injury that can make them tender for several weeks. But there are ways of minimizing that. In my practice, I do not use needles.  I use the TSK Steriglide cannulas. There is one entry point at the corner of the mouth that is anesthetized. The cannula is tapered but blunt, not sharp.  It glides nicely in tissues, whether in the lip or face and greatly decreases the risk of bruising. The overall effect is less tissue trauma, which usually results in minimal post-treatment discomfort.

Yes, it is normal to still have some swelling and tenderness, which can last 1-2 weeks after your injections. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your inquiry. What you are experiencing is normal. The lips can be sensitive and swollen for quite some time following lip injections. The feeling of "looking weird" while you speak is probably all mental. Give it another week or so and you should feel back to normal.

If you are not happy with your final results, you can have the filler dissolved with an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. I recommend following up with injector if this persists after 2 weeks. It is normal to have some discomfort at this point. Sometimes injections can cause a bruise deeper in the lip which may not be seen, but is felt and can be painful for 2-3 weeks. Use ice if needed. Best, Dr. M

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing some lip tenderness after your treatment.  The lips are a very sensitive area, and it's not uncommon to experience swelling (which can make the lips feel stiff) and mild tenderness for up to 2 weeks after treatment.  Try gently applying cool compresses and ice to your lips, as this can often help with swelling.  If you still notice swelling/stiffness and pain in a 3-4 days, I would recommend you follow-up with your injector to discuss your concerns and determine the best course of action.
