Lip filler hard and painful after Restylane. Is this normal?

I have had restylane lip fillers today for the first time. After about an hour my lips have Become very painful and felt hard and difficult to move right after the injections. Is this normal? I keep getting sharp pains when doing certain movements with my lips!

There can be some discomfort and swelling after lip injections which will resolve in 1-2 weeks. Icing may help. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for this question. There is some pain and swelling after the injections. I always suggest icing and rest. If your pain is out of control or you notice color changes in your lips then have your injector exam you.Best wishes, Dr. ALDO :)

The side effects that you’re describing are to be expected within the first days after getting injections. The good news is that the swelling should begin to diminish on its own, revealing your smooth final results. In the meantime, you can try applying a cold compress to the area to help make yourself more comfortable. If you still have concerns, talk with your cosmetic surgeon or injector.

Thank you for your question. Yes, it is normal to have some swelling and discomfort after injection. There is a good amount of swelling after lip fillers and this can cause the lips to feel hard and stiff. Your lips have went through trauma, even though it may not feel like it. You can use cold compresses to help reduce the swelling. Please remember that swelling will be worst the first 2-3 days and can take additional 10 days to resolve. It is not surprising that you have pain and swelling. I always wonder whether other physicians explain this before injecting!!  You should be applying ice packs although these will have limited efficacy if not employed in the first 24 hours after the procedure.  The lips tend to swell more than other areas and, of course, this would have an effect on your ability to articulate.

swelling and some discomfort after lip injection for just one day is usual. Use some warm compresses if has been more than a day and let the swelling subside, for the pain take tylenol

Yes, don't worry, this is not abnormal. There is significant swelling following lip fillers and swelling causes things to feel hard and stiff. Even though it may not seem like it, your lips went through trauma! It's no surprise they are sore and painful either. I would advise cold compresses to help reduce the swelling, however do be aware that swelling will be the worst during the first 2-3 days and should reduce after that but could still take up to 10 days to fully subside.
