Am I allergic to Juvederm Voluma? Now 2 weeks later: red face for 24 hours after exercising, stress, sometimes after a shower.

Question

I got a bad rash all over my face, neck and ears 24 hours after the injection. It took 5-6 days until it was almost gone. After I work out, my face stays red for almost 24 hours. The place where the filler was injected, has a tinkling, burning feeling, a hot flash, but one that stays for 24 hours. I am allergic to wheat, tuna, bell pepers, apples and latex. Is it the HA that causes this burning feeling like I have a fever?

I suggest an evaluation, likely you'll want to have this reversed with hyaluronidase enzyme.  But you should be evaluated for infection or chronic inflammation.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for your question and I am sorry to hear of your reactions.  I would recommend seeing your injector for an in-person examination.  An infection would need to be ruled out first as this would require dissolving the filler and treating you with antibiotics.  Though an allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid is atypical, Voluma does contain lidocaine as an anesthetic, which can cause patient's allergies.  If no infection is appreciated, an appointment with an allergist would be the next step.  Hope that this helps.

I would say allergy is extremely unlikely. I would look at other reasons such as infection or other skin conditions. See your doctor and/or a dermatologist. Are you 100% certain Voluma was injected? Some places try to cut costs and inject imitations. It that is the case, all bets are off and it might be a reaction to what was injected.

The symptoms that you are describing are unusual.  Allergies to HA injectables are very uncommon but not impossible. I am concerned that you are either allergic to the product or, more likely,  low grade infection Please reach out to the doctor who injected you or see a board certified Dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic dermatology to help you through this issue.
