Whom is better able to perform Cool Sculpting....a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon?

While either can do a good job, a plastic surgeon can offer you liposuction or a tummy tuck if you would be better treated with those procedures.  A good derm would refer you out, but, in my experience, sometimes they don't.

I believe that any physician that has been formally trained to perform the CoolSculpting procedures should be able to provide a safe and effective treatment to an appropriate patient.  You may want to also check with the office you are considering to see who actually performs the treatment.  In some offices, this may be the physician while in others it may be another person designated by the physician.  

If you are considering any type of body contouring procedures it is best to find the most comprehensively trained physician. Your surgeon should be expert in all types of body contouring procedures so that the best possible treatment option will be selected for your particular case. Physician's who have limited training in body contouring surgery may not be able to offer the best method of treatment for your particular situation. For these reasons it is usually best to consult a physician board certified in plastic surgery.

I'm very curious what kind of "substantial internal injuries" these patients have from Coolsculpting.  I am a Plastic Surgeon but at my office the Aesthetician's perform the procedure for patients.  They received training from Coolsculpting doctors after we purchased the machine.  We have never experienced any kind of internal injuries since the treatment only freezes the fat tissue.  When looking for a Coolsculpting provider I would ask how long they have been performing Coolsculpting treatments and if they are a doctor or licensed Aesthetician.  The longer they have been doing the treatment the better they should be at it.

The issue is with the term Cosmetic Surgeon.  Body contouring has long been done by Dermatologist and Plastic Surgeons.  If you are seeing either then you should be care for appropriately.  If concerns develop afterwards then they are qualified to manage them.

Hello,It doesn't matter whether a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon performs the treatment. What really matters is the level of training the provider has. If any untrained professional performs a treatment, there is always a risk of injury. Properly trained providers, whether board certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons, should not be causing injury to patients. As with any treatment, ensure that your provider is licensed to perform the service.

The information that you and your husband got from the OR nurse who works for a cosmetic surgeon suggests that he/she is either ignorant or is straight up lying to you.FACT: Coolsculpting was invented and developed by two Harvard Dermatologists. The company that sells CoolSculpting devices pays a royalty to Massachusetts General Hospital to license out these two dermatologists invention.FACT: The majority of clinical trials on the technology were performed by dermatologists.FACT: The CoolSculpting treatment is extremely safe thanks to the research and development led by dermatologists. I have not heard of a single case of "internal" injuries from the procedure. If this cosmetic surgeon sees a "lot" of injuries from patients treated by dermatologists, I would be interested in them publishing their experiences or presenting them at a scientific meeting.

You ask a good question. The fact is that CoolSculpting is a very good procedure with few complications. And as long as the procedure is done well, the outcomes should be good. However, patient selection here is key. Not all people are candidates for CoolSculpting, and not all areas of fat accumulation can be treated. And it is for this reason that I would go to a board certified plastic surgeon for this. While some non-surgical practices are bringing in the technology, they will not have at their disposal other surgical options to offer when CoolSculpting is not the right treatment alternative. As they say, if all you have is a hammer, the whole world is a nail. So, it is best to be treated by a plastic surgeon who has not only CoolSculpting as an option, but also liposuction, and other surgical techniques.
