Do fat cells return after cool sculpting?

Fat cells metabolize differently than other cells in the
body. After puberty, you really do not
make any new fat cells.The ones you
have just get bigger when you gain weight and smaller when you lose weight.The reason some areas are larger than others
is that there is a larger population of fat cells in the larger area. Treatments that affect fat either physically
remove fat cells (like liposuction), or freeze fat cells that causes death of
the cells and effectively reduces the number of fat cells in an area (like
coolsclupting).Those fat cells that are
removed or killed are permanently gone and new ones do not grow back again.The remaining fat cells still swell and contract
as your weight fluctuates but with less cells present, those areas are less
prominent and now less likely to be out of proportion.People tend to lose weight or gain weight
more proportionally after fat has been removed in selective areas.It is important to try to maintain a healthy
steady weight after treatment though because if too much weight is gained, the
small changes in fat cell population have less obvious effect and everything

CoolSculpting has FDA approval for fat reduction since 2010. CoolSculpting freezes the fat cells. The fat cells die via a process called apoptosis, (programmed cell death). The number of fat cells are therefore reduced. The body will take these cells up, process them and excrete them, just as any other cell. Yes, the remnants are filtered through the liver, and then excreted eventually via stool.

We do not make a significant amount of fat cells after our teen years... when you do Coolsculpting, you kill the fat cells in the treated area permanently.

The Coolsculpting treatment freezes and eliminates fat cells in the area of treatment and those fat cells that have been frozen will not return. The best way to maximize your result is through regular exercise and a healthy diet. 

Thank you for your question. When fat cells die, they are gone, but adjacent cells may enlarge locally or in other areas of your body. Typically, we do not see this. If weight stays consisten, they usually preserve long term improvement. I hope this helps!

Fat cells that are targeted and killed during a CoolSculpting procedure will be permanently released from the body, meaning those exact cells will not return. However, maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle is critical to ensure new fat cells to not replace them.

It is proven through many human and animal studies that up to 30% of fat that is targeted with CoolSculpting is removed forever!  Those fat cells will never be around again.

Hello and thank you for this question. We often get this question when we are discussing about liposuction as well. No the fat cells once they are destroyed are gone for good. The volume of the remaining fat cells may increase or decrease with weight fluctuations but the fat cells do not return. I would recommend you can discuss all of these issues with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area to discuss all issues regarding potential body contouring.

Once the fat cells die from the freezing during coolsculpting they do not regenerate or duplicate. However, not all of the fat cells are killed so if you gain weight the remaining fat cells will enlarge as usual. As you gain weight your body will still be more uniform as we are targeting areas with excess fat to begin with. It is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss procedure but should be permanent if your weight is somewhat stable.
