Does miraDry help sweating between buttocks?

Question

I am a 45 year old female in good health except that I am somewhat overweight - 170 lbs and 5,4". The skin between my buttocks and in my groin folds is constantly sweaty and itching. The skin is clear with no redness, peeling, or exudate; I do not think this is a fungal or yeast problem. The itching is only when I'm sweating ... but that can be constant, even at rest. I realize I am perimenopausal but is this really a symptom? What can I do? I am so uncomfortable. No other hyperhidrosis.

Thank you for your question.  Excessive sweating between the buttocks can be very problematic and the use of miraDry in this location (or any other location except the armpits) would be considered off-label.  There are other solutions that could be used here including Botox (or Dysport).  I would recommend that you visit with a practice with experience in dealing with excessive sweating.

Hello Elizabeth. This sounds like a really challenging problem. MiraDry is not FDA approved in the groin or buttocks, but I have heard of some physicians using it "off label" in other parts of the body. I cannot recommend off label usage. Another possibility is to use Botox in the the sweaty regions of your body. Also, if the sweating is caused by rolls of skin, then I suggest you consider skin excision directly.Speak with a board certified specialist.

Thank you for your message! At this time, miraDry is only FDA cleared for the indication of underarm sweat and odor, though may be approved for other areas in the future. I would recommend following up with your primary care physician for your concerns, though weight loss and using some type of powder in the area may help reduce irritation. Make sure you are changing your clothes after exercise or sweating as to not irritate the area further!

You should consult with a board certified physician to be examined and discuss your issues. MiraDry may soon get approval to treat other areas outside of the underarms, and may be a good treatment. Until then, there may be a topical treatment that would work well.

Hi, Thank you for your question.  Consider loosing weight (in our office we offer the OBALON procedure) and using baby powder in these folds.  Reducing the amount of skin on skin contact will reduce the moisture production.  Wearing clothing made of 100% cotton can also help absorb the excess moisture you are experiencing ...Best of luck.

There are actually a couple of different treatment options for excessive sweating, but Miradry is not FDA-approved for sweating in the groin or buttock. Oral medications, topical solutions and powders, and Botox are some treatment options that can help minimize sweating in this area. But since you are also having itching you may have a condition, caused by the sweating, called intertrigo, or irritation of the skin folds. I recommend that you follow with a Board Certified Dermatologist for formal evaluation and treatment.
