The cost of surgery definitely varies by geographical regions. Certainly by state, but also within states when comparing larger urban areas to suburban practices. I practiced in 2 different states in very different types of areas and the costs are dramatically different. Every procedure takes into account 3 factors. They are the procedure fees, anesthesia fee, and facility fee. Each of these is a variable on its own from region to region and affects the total cost. If you are looking for less expensive surgery, you should keep in mind that your travel fees, accommodations, food, and need for followup may end up costing considerably more than you think. You also need to have a travel companion to stay with you. Also, if you have a complication it is highly likely that you will have at least some difficulty in getting another surgeon to see you where you live. If they do, it will likely cost you. If you need a revision procedure and have it done where you live it will cost you like for a brand new surgery. However, your original surgeon would have a revision policy and you would likely pay relatively little, if anything. For all of these reasons, it is best to have surgery not too far away whenever possible. While many of us plastic surgeons have patients that travel long distances to see us, it is very important that you are prepared and make an informed decision that is not mainly based on cost.
