After Restylane lip injections huge red purple lump on top lip. Normal? (Photos)

Question

Ended up with a purple lump on top lip one side only and more and more it is starting to look thinner than the opposite side. Is it possible that it didn't "take" in that area or wasn't injected deep enough?

Hello Clarissa. This is a significant bruise on your lips. Bruising is a normal risk of injections. If you're taking aspirin or ibuprofen then bruising is more common. Your bruise will resolve soon. See my link below on ways to reduce bruising and swelling.Follow up with your injector and best wishes.

It appears from your pictures that the area you are describing is most likely a bruise and it should resolve with time. It can take several weeks to completely resolve and it is too soon to tell at this time if you may need more filler or not. I would wait several weeks and then discuss your concerns with your treating physician.

Also, it is too soon to determine if you need more filler. You will have to wait till all swelling to resolve to see your final results. I recommend discussing your concerns with your injector. you don't say how long ago the injection was but it probably was in a few days. the bruise will subside and if it was done within 48 hours apply ice and then after that warm compresses. in 2 weeks the result will be obvious and if it isn't even then see your doctor for resolving the issue. be sure you are seeing a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon

Thank you for your question.  You definitely have a bruise that should resolve itself shortly.  Concerning the unevenness, it is best to wait two weeks to see if it balances out once the swelling dissipates.  If you are still unhappy at that time you can follow up with your board certified Dermatologist who injected you to correct the asymmetry either by injecting more filler or sculpting the larger side with hyaluronidase, it is dependent upon what you are trying to accomplish.  Regards, Dr. Matt Elias

Well you definitely have a bruise from the procedure which explains the purple lump. In terms of one side not "taking" like the other, it is more likely that you have an asymmetry that was not correctly accounted for - meaning your doctor needed to inject more into that side. It is also possible that you are more swollen in one side than the other, causing them to look unbalanced. I am not sure how long ago you had the procedure done but I would wait at least a full 7 days after the procedure and then return to your doctor if you are still unhappy.

Depending on how long after the injection this was it could be a bruise. I would recommend seeing  your surgeon to discuss.This is one benefit of cannulas for injection. Less pain, less bruising and less swelling.Best of luck,DrC
