The surgeon who did my surgery checked to see if there were any remaining sutures and did not find any and has just brushed me off by saying it will heal by itself. I have now gone to another surgeon who did a ultrasound which my Surgeon refused to do and has said that I have a 5mm to 7mm cavity leading to my ambilicalcord. Can someone PLEASE advise me how this could be fixed? And if it would close on its own. I am so depressed please help Update: Just to add I have had swabs taken from my belly button which confirmed I don't have an infection
Answer: Persistent Belly Button Leaking After Tummy Tuck: Seeking Solutions Thank you for your question regarding the persistent leaking from your belly button following a tummy tuck and muscle repair. Based on your description, the issue appears to be a small cavity or sinus tract that is not healing naturally. This could result from incomplete healing of the umbilical area or an underlying connection, such as the remnant of a sinus tract leading toward the abdominal wall. While your original surgeon's suggestion to allow it to heal on its own might work in some cases, persistent symptoms after a year suggest that intervention is needed. The ultrasound findings of a 5mm to 7mm cavity indicate that the area likely won’t resolve without further treatment. To address this: Surgical Revision: The most definitive solution would likely involve a minor surgical revision. This procedure would excise the sinus tract and ensure the area is properly closed. This approach can provide a permanent fix and alleviate your ongoing discomfort and frustration. Additional Imaging: An MRI or CT scan could offer more detailed insights into the anatomy of the tract, ensuring that the full extent of the issue is addressed during revision surgery. Second Opinion: You’ve taken an excellent step by consulting another surgeon. Ensure that the plastic surgeon you work with is board-certified and experienced in revision procedures. Mental Health Support: Dealing with ongoing surgical complications can take a toll on your mental health. Don’t hesitate to seek support from a counselor or support group if you’re feeling depressed about your situation. While it is reassuring that infection has been ruled out, addressing this issue surgically will likely provide the relief you need and restore confidence in your tummy tuck results. Continue advocating for yourself and working with qualified professionals who take your concerns seriously. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: May require surgery This would most likely require surgical intervention since it’s already been over a year since your surgery. It’s unfortunate that your original surgeon no longer responds to your concerns. Please find another surgeon to get this repaired.

Answer: Umbilical wound Hi, sorry to hear that you have not healed despite a significant period of time passing since your previous surgery. It is difficult to provide accurate advice without performing an examination in person, but it may be that the wound needs refreshing and re-suturing as after a year if a cavity has formed it is unlikely to heal without intervention. It is possible that this could be performed under local anaesthetic with you awake as a daycase procedure.

Answer: This will heal The wound can be freshened to remove the fibrinous slough, and gauze packing placed twice daily. Slowly the wound will heal from the bottom up. Have faith - it will heal. It may take months.

Answer: Tummy Tuck - belly button leaking There is something not healing or remaining after your tummy tuck a year ago... somebody needs to explore that umbilical area and look for either retained sutures or simply areas that have not healed but need to be cleaned out. My suspicion is on retained sutures. There are still some surgeons who use either just a few or multiple sutures that are permanent- those your body will continue to spit out and cause drainage until removed. If you need to reach out and discuss further, give our office a call the number is 847-853-9900. Best Wishes 847-853-9900!!
