I encourage you to check with your plastic surgeon to make sure that you understood his or her post-operative instructions. Typically, I don't require that any of my rhinoplasty patients wear the splint longer than one week. Occasionally, I will have them wear steri-tapes on the nose the following week to help control swelling. Prolonged use of the splint holds no value after the first 7-10 days, because the nasal bone and cartilage are already relatively stable by this time.
Typically, I keep the splint on for 1 week and then ask patients to wear it at night only for another 1-2 weeks as an added reminder to not roll over in the middle of the night and roll onto your nose. 2 months is a little excessive, but even if you had worn if for that period it shouldn't alter the final result....it would just be an imposition for a long time. Hope that helps.
I am not sure why your surgeon wants your nasal splint on for so long. I usually have patients wear a nasal splint for one week only.
I usually have my patients wear a splint for one week and then it isremoved. You should discuss this plan with your surgeon as to why you will needa more prolonged period of splint use.
The splint after rhinoplasty generally serves two purposes. It limits the swelling and it protects the bones which are often reset during a rhinoplasty. Typically splints are placed for one week after surgery although this does not encompass the total time needed for bone fixation. The skin usually will not allow the prolonged use of a splint for much longer than a week as the splint will loosen with time. Check with your surgeon to verify that they said two months.
You will find that very few of us will have a splint on after rhinoplasty beyond one week. You might ask your surgeon again to clarify the need, or to confirm you understand the aftercare plan.
I only have my patients wear a splint for one week after a rhinoplasty. I would check with your surgeon and confirm he/she wants you to wear the splint for an extended period. The bones are typically healed to a point they can not be moved after 2-3 weeks so a splint beyond this time period does not make any sense to me unless there are some very unusual circumstances at play.
I would check again with your surgeon. Two months is about one month and three and a half weeks longer that I require patients to wear an external nasal splint after surgery. Talk to your surgeon and confirm what they require.
Victoria: Thanks for your question. You are far enough out that you are unlikely to have any swelling left in the skin to explain this change. One possibility is that if your nose size was significantly reduced (looks to be a pretty significant reduction) then there is less tension...
The answer will depend upon the nature of the bump. Something deep to the skin could be done through a closed rhinoplasty approach.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA
After Rhinoplasty patients are advised not to use facial cleansers directly on the nose for 1-2 weeks post op. This is also due to the cast that is on your nose. Tape is often worn for 2 weeks after that but you can wash your face gently at this point. I would be sure to ask your surgeon these...
It looks like this is probably caused by a dissolving stitch or ingrown hair. As a general rule it is always best to notify your surgeon immediate with any questions.
Do not be alarmed that you have ruined your results. Your nose will change as time goes on, especially these next 6 months. Laughing is an unlikely cause of the changes. If you continue to have concerns you can consult with your doctor for an in person opinion.Hope this helps,Dr. Ali Sajjadian
