Excellent surgeon! I feel fortunate to have had my breast reduction done by him. Great bedside manner. He put me at ease and everything went smoothly. Still working on some scar revisions, but overall very happy.
Dr. Mathes is a top notch plastic surgeon with imacculate bedside manner and shoots you straight. I am so lucky to have been in his care. Highly recommend for explant surgery- which is not ever something we look forward to. Thank you for your skill and care Dr. Mathes.
After a long time coming, I was able to get breast augmentation covered by my Medicaid insurance. I felt comfortable with Dr Mathes after our first consult. Never made me feel weird or misgendered me. Although in the day of the surgery, the staff kept misgendering me, which sucked because it took away from the experience of finally curbing my dysphoria from having no breasts. The surgery was an hour and 15 minutes long. My chest looks great even after only a day. Can't wait for them to drop and "fluff" to get full results. Post op appointment is on Dec 5th. 10 days after the surgery on Nov 25. Updated on 27 Nov 2019: Updated on 15 May 2020: Some follow up photos to show how they’ve healed up!
I got a breast reduction a few months ago from Dr. Mathes. He did such an amazing job. I have other friends who also had breast reductions and none of their boobs turned out nearly as nice as mine did. They were either weirdly shaped, too big or slightly saggy (compared to mine). My new boobs are the perfect size and very perky and round. There is no boob hanging down, it just sticks straight out, so the scars healed super well. My boobs literally look like I got a breast augmentation. There are no implants in mine, just natural. When I went to the dermatologist to check up on my scar healing and appearance, his assistant who has worked with a plastic surgeon and breast reductions for over 12 years said that my boobs are the nicest ones she has ever seen, and even asked where I got them done, who did them, etc... I cannot thank Dr. Mathes enough.
Dr. Mathes and his entire staff at CU Plastic Surgery were fantastic. They put me at ease, answered my questions and the results speak for themselves. I had a mini life and had so little bruising, I was able to grocery shop (without scaring people) 3 days after my procedure. I highly recommend this team. Worth every penny!
My experience with Dr. Mathes was superb! He guided me throughout the entire procedure and answered all of my questions, without any hesitation. I am extremely pleased with the results of my reduction. Dr. Mathes was knowledgeable and professional and I look forward to future procedures. I'd like to mention that he changed my life for the better, and I will always be grateful. Thank you.
I foolishly trusted a surgeon who was new to Denver, from Miami, to do my breast reconstruction who I only knew of from an online info commercial he himself paid for to promote how great of a surgeon he was. He claimed he was a "Breast Reconstruction Revision Expert". I was a fool to believe him. When I met Dr. Mathes, the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, both of my breast implants were severely infected, and one of them was coming thru my skin. I had an infected lymph node under one arm pit. I was afraid I was going to die. Despite his incredibly busy schedule, Dr. David Mathes was willing to help me. He scheduled emergency surgery for me the vert next week. I believe that he saved my life. He did an incredible job. My health is back. He has done all my follow up visits. The entire staff at the University of Colorado Anschutz Campus has been nothing short of outstanding, from the anesthesiologist, to the physician assistant that works side by side with Dr. Mathes, to all of the nurses. I will be forever grateful to everyone. Thank-you to everyone.
I lost weight also, about 80-90 lbs. I had so much skin on my stomach and back that I was always hot, uncomfortable, and embarrassed. I mean I lived in spanx, compression and support garments. Like I said it was a hot life. Then I had consultation with Dr. David Mathes; who listened to what I wanted and assured me that the hanging skin on my back and stomach was absolutely fixable. He assured me that my case was not hopeless and that he thought I would be pleased with the results. Wow! I am so happy with the results. I had a huge apron of fat removed from my stomach, and huge roll of fat and hanging skin removed from my back. My tummy tuck and back lift is a fabulous and remarkable transformation and I'm so pleased. Also scarring is concealed very well. Dr. Mathes proved to be an incredible, accomplished, skillful, innovative and qualified surgeon of the highest caliber and expertise. I sincerely offer the highest recommendation. SSC 3 months post
At 45 years old I lost over 100 pounds in less than a year and went from 50-20% body fat. As a result I had excess skin that I desperately wanted removed so I could see the results of all my hard work. I was blessed to have connected with Dr. David Mathes. Dr. David Mathes is an AMAZING surgeon! He is so kind, patient and made me feel at ease the entire way from my first consultation all the way to the final follow up appointment. My recovery was much faster than I expected and my scar is minimal and hides perfectly under my swim suit and undies. I am almost a year out and the scar is very light. I have no regrets whatsoever and am considering a Breast Lift and Implants next. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. David Mathes as you will not be disappointed.
After the rather unpleasant year of cancer treatment, it was a pure pleasure to be working with Dr. Mathes and his team. From the very first consult, through the mastectomy and all phases of reconstruction, the team listened to my input, took into consideration the best solution for me and kept me informed at all times. Perhaps the most important part of the experience was that Dr. Mathes took the time after an extensive surgery to speak with my family, making sure they were kept up to date and answering all their questions. This team is one of the best I have ever worked with, caring, considerate, professional and experienced. I would recommend Dr. Mathes to any friend or family member, or anyone asking for a reference. Wonderful doctor, great team!
The average time depends on the choice of technique for reconstruction. I always tell my patients that breast reconstruction is a process rather than a procedure. In tissue expander based reconstruction the first stage takes about 4 to 6 months and then one can exchange to implants. In autologous reconstruction (using one own tissue such as a DIEP. After the initial surgery most patients have a revision at 3 months. I find that most patients want an additional small revision at the 6 month mark and then those that need nipple reconstruction can have that completed in the office. Surgical recovery for implant reconstruction is faster and most patients feeling more normal by 3 weeks. The initial recovery from autologous reconstruction (DIEP) is 3 weeks of surgical recovery and 3 weeks of felling tired. Most patients feel like they are getting back to normal by 6 weeks.
It really varies from patient to patient how much discomfort they experience with tissue expanders. Most patients find that the initial expansions are uncomfortable but that this decreases over time. Recently some reconstruction can be done over the muscle with tissue expanders (so called pre-pectoral reconstruction) and those patents seem to have less pain. As with all reconstructive options there are trade-offs to each approach.
It is always a challenge to match the radiated side to the non-radiated side. Generally if the implant is higher and tighter one can perform a release of the capsule and I have found that the addition of alloderm or any other (ADM) can help provide coverage and relax the internal capsule. Often the non-radiated breast reconstruction may need to have the fold reset a bit higher to help restore symmetry. The other common treatment option would be to consider switching to an autologous reconstruction using tissue from the abdomen to replace the implant (DIEP). It is work discussing options with your plastic surgeon to see what revision surgery would be best for you.
It is unclear what you mean by weight. There is no body weight limit for the placement of implants. The determination of the size of the implant (that is how many cc the implant is) is based on an anatomical factors such as the width of the breast, the amount of breast tissue, stretch of the breast tissue and sometimes the nipple position. These factors can impact the selection of the implant and what size is chosen.
It is difficult to diagnose your problem without a physical exam. That said, it sounds like you could have capsular contracture this is when the capsule tightens over time and can lead to pain and discomfort. You would likely benefit from seeing a plastic surgeon who can examine you and offer a solution to your problem.
