Dimple and Discoloration of skin 1.5 years after Juvederm Voluma injection into cheeks, why did this happen? (photo)

I had voluma injected into my cheeks over a year and a half ago, & there were two dimples and discoloration at injection needle site. I went back a few months later and she told me there weren't any dimples (they were NOT there before). Clearly, but she offered to inject with restalyne to try to help... a year later and the Dimples are back and worse than before. Does anyone know what may have caused this? Another doctor suggested maybe she used an off the market product & not voluma at all :(

This is difficult to answer without before and after pictures. It isn't typical that Voluma would cause a permanent dimple or discoloration. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph and I am sorry to hear of your dimple and discolorations.  I can not think of why Voluma would lead to a dimple or discoloration unless it was improperly injected and some areas of your cheek received the product while the area of dimpling did not.  Unfortunately one can only speculate as we do not have the full details of your initial procedure.  I would work with your injector, or seek a second opinion, as to how to treat your cheeks.  Best wishes.

I have never heard of Voluma causing permanent pigment discoloration or dimples. I would recommend that you schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to have this assessed in person. So sorry that you are experiencing this.

filler used to enhance the appearance of the face. It is difficult to make an assessment without standardized before and after photographs. Temporary discoloration is sometimes seen after an injection. I have not seen dimples after a filler. Please

It is very difficult to assess the changes on your skin from the photos. The dimpling and pigmentation that you are describing are not from Voluma. I would suggest you consult a board certified cosmetic dermatologist to assess the area for future cosmetic injections.  Best, Dr. Green

Thank you for your question.  It's difficult to say what may have happened without reviewing your before and after photos.  Generally speaking, it would be highly unusual to experience permanent skin discoloration and dimpling after a Voluma treatment.  Dimpling can sometimes occur if any filler is injected unevenly, but this should not cause any discoloration.  One can really only speculate what may have happened without assessing you in-person.  I would recommend scheduling a second opinion with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon.  Best of luck!
