How long does Voluma last? When do patients start to notice that results have reduced? Unhappy with result.

I have been told 9 months, 12 months and 18 months by different doctors. I know that it is supposed to last up to 24 months, but I want to know doctors' actual experiences from working with this product. I am hoping that it breaks down sooner rather than later. I have decided against hyaluronidase.

Thank you for your question.  Voluma is a very good filler for your cheeks and midface.  It is a bit of a larger molecule, so it is usually placed deeper in the skin, (subdermal).  The sales people will tell you it lasts about 2 years.  In our experience it last about a year and a half.  As far as Juvederm Ultra Plus, (which we like for the nasolabial folds), and Juvederm Ultra, (which we like for the lips), the sales people will tell you it lasts about a year, in reality about 9 months. Every person is different so it can last a longer or shorter time period, depending on the patient.  It has been our experience that some folks that are hypermetabolic, (in the gym twice a day, etc.), tend to break down Botox and Fillers faster.  Each individual is different though. Thank you for your question. Voluma is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid that is superior to Juvederm. It is currently approved and intended for correction of volume loss in cheeks. The results will last about 24 months. Always consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon.

Voluma  is a great product that can last up to 16 months or longer. I generally tell my patients that they should consider a year to year and a half at best. The original studies that were done for this product used to three and four syringes . I believe that the length of time this product lasts is related to the quantity injected. If you are unhappy with your result and you have and want it to go away I suggest you use hyaluronidase, it is a very safe drug.

Hello Rose,Thank you for your question.  Studies done for Voluma stated that in 2/3 of patients, the product lasted 2 years or more.  With that being said, the average injected during the study was 6.8mL, which is basically 7 syringes.  Depending on the person's lifestyle (activity, length of time in the sun, hydration and diet), I have seen the product dissipate faster.  Most likely, you are looking at around 12 months for there to be a visible difference in the amount of product remaining.  Hope this helps.All the best,Carlos Mata, MD, MBA. Part of the confusion is how it is used.  Any filler injected superficially in a highly mobile area does not last as long as a less mobile area and deep injection.  Voluma used deep along the bone in a non mobile area like the cheeks should last at least 2 years.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  There should be a distinction made between how long the material stays within the body and how long your results last.  In the case of Voluma the former is approximately 2 years while the latter is around 16 months.  This of course will vary by patient and by amount of Voluma used.  If you are unhappy with your results your injector should be willing to dissolve the remaining filler at little additional risk to you.

Science supports a longevity of 2 years, but a clinical result will gradually fade. 50% of the product should be gone at a year, and certainly the early clinical benefits of that initial volume enhancement as well. If you are unhappy with the appearance, hyaluronidase is a very appropriate option.

It's going to depend on any number of factors such as how many syringes were used as well as how your individual body reacts to the filler. However, without any kind of touch up, I think that your results will diminish at about 12 months. I am sorry that you are unhappy. Hope this helps.

I am sorry you are unhappy with the results of your Voluma.  The FDA studies on Voluma showed that a high percentage of people were still noticing results at 24 months.  However, in those studies, large numbers of syringes were used (6-8 per person in many cases).  In "real life", most people aren't willing to pay for that much filler at one time and so most doctors inject 2-3 syringes in a single treatment session.  Therefore, I tell my patients to expect 15-18 months duration.
Just FYI - hyaluronidase is considered very safe and effective for removing hyaluronic acid based fillers.
