Vitamins and laxatives before breast augmentation?

Question

Is it ok to continue taking omega 3 liquid? Vitamin C? D? B12? Collagen liquid or powder? I have read a lot about the meds causing constipation and I don't want to put any added stress on incisions, is it ok to start taking a laxative a few days before surgery? Metamucil or something better? Thanks

Thank you for your question.  Each Surgeon will have their own protocol they wish for you to follow before surgery.  I typically recommend only Vit C, Iron and medically necessary meds prior to surgery. Iron can cause constipation so sometimes I will suggest it every other day. I would suggest speaking to your Surgeon and following their recommendations.  Best of luck to you.

I appreciate your concerns Jessica however it is best to consult with your board certified plastic surgeon regarding exactly which medication or supplements should be taken or stopped prior to your upcoming surgery. I do not think it’s a good idea to take any form of laxatives prior to surgery as a preventive measure. Discuss all aspects of your upcoming surgery, preparation and recovery with your surgeon. This is a great question. For most of the vitamins you mentioned, there is no problem continuing these before and after breast augmentation. The only exception might be the Omega 3, which tends to have a slight increase in thinning the blood. I don't believe that it is dramatic, though. Constipation post-operatively is caused by use of narcotics. In all of my breast augmentation surgeries, I utilize Experel which is a long-term numbing medication that lasts 203 days. By using this, use of narcotics is much less and constipation much less of a problem. If my patients do have constipation, then I recommend nightly use of Milk of Magnesia. I have not found that stool softeners, such as Colace, beneficial and I do not recommend them.

It is important to discuss all medications and supplements that you take with your surgeon.  Often times patients are advised to stop medications that can thin the blood, such as Omega 3's, prior to surgery.  Your surgeon will let you know what is recommended for you.
