I am 3 weeks post op, and have a odd smell in my nose. I have no other signs of infection. It is not putrid as I've seen others describe, but unpleasant. Note: I had my skin thinned during surgery.
Answer: Smell in nose after rhinoplasty Dear Nolan_C, Rhinoplasty surgery either reductive or augmentative in nature can be either internal or external. Thinning of the skin is common after reduction rhinoplasty and can be present after augmentation rhinoplasty when skin is placed over a cartilage graft or artificial implant. Generally, the thin skin of the dorsum adjusts over time and there is some thickening or hypertrophy to minimize that overly thinned appearance. Smells in the nose following rhinoplasty are very common. It is very common to have a septorhinoplasty performed and delayed healing of the septum with crusting or septal perforation or inflammation irritation of the lining of the wall of the nose can all cause smells. It is very important that you visit your primary rhinoplasty surgeon both to see and assess the thinning skin on the bridge of your nose as well as an internal nasal exam to rule out common causes post-rhinoplasty smells such as soft tissue mucosal wound breakdown, scabbing, small inflamed or infected areas of cartilage, retained sutures and other treatable causes. I would highly encourage a visit with your rhinoplasty surgeon to address these concerns and I’m sure you’ll end up with an excellent result. I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck. R. Stephen Mulholland, M.D. Certified Plastic Surgeon Yorkville, Toronto
