Is dead skin normal after getting a FUE hair transplant?

Each follicular unit is taken with a small piece of skin around it so that the hair root doesn’t need to be handled directly. This skin “collar” around the hair will often stick up a little, creating a bumpy appearance in the first month. When the hairs shed, they often will do so along with dried out skin from the part that was sticking up. At 3 weeks you should be ok to scrub a little harder to remove these areas, but avoid being aggressive so you don’t irritate your scalp. 

It is best to contact your surgeon for post surgery issues and care since all doctors have slightly different instructions.

Skin and hair can shed after the procedure starting few days after surgery and it can be normal. However, there is also possibility (if something went wrong) that there is necrosis of the scalp skin. You should check immediately with you surgeon

Sloughed skin can be normal as the implanted hairs can either start to shed during the first few weeks.  It is quite normal for implanted hairs to shed post procedure, but our early use of regenerative techniques has helped some of our patients retain hairs and realize results in a shorter period of time.  Consult with your hair surgeon to ensure your care is optimal post procedure.  Best Dr. Anil Shah

What you're experiencing is very normal. The dried blood and hairs typically begin shedding after 2 weeks. The hair bulb is what's really important and that has taken hold and stays in place. Apply shampoo and gently massage. They will slowly come off. Don't pick.Discuss your concerns with your surgeon for more information.

It is difficult to say if it is dried blood or some hair follicles that are coming out. Please do not rub your scalp. Please take a picture of what is coming out and show it to your surgeon or better still take the stuff coming out and show it to your surgeon. All The Best !

Although I always hesitate to answer questions of a patient who is immediately postop, I can speak in generalities.  Specifically, however, I always ask a patient that is immediately postop to speak to his doctor because your doctor knows the specifics.  The dead skin, which we call scabs, should for our patients be scrubbed off after the first 7 days.  There can be ongoing desquamation of skin but again please check with your doctor to make sure that he or she thinks this is normal.  Good luck on your hair journey!

As you have heard from the other expert hair restoration surgeons, 3 weeks after your procedure it is normal to have some flaking of skin and loss of the transplanted hair shafts.  by 2 weeks, your transplanted hairs should have taken and are living now.  Scrubbing your head should be ok, but ask your surgeon before vigorously scrubbing.  Best of luck!

The first month, small crusts will form at the base of each capillary graft. As in any healing process, small crusts  will itch more and more and then fall into the form of dandruff. After hair transplantation, the hair roots are weakened due to the reduced oxygen supply. 2 or 3 weeks later, the hair that is still present in the transplanted roots will fall off. This is a perfectly natural process. 
Don't remove them by scrubing because you can damage the follicles.
To clean them, you foam the shampoo and you keep on your scalp for 15 minutes then you do the wash very gently.
After couple of wash the crust will disapppear.

It is normal for scabs and hair to shed post hair transplant. We don’t recommend firm scrubbing as it could dislodge the planted follicle graft
