Teeth not showing when I smile or laugh. Solutions? (Photo)

Question

In december I'm having double jaw surgery, in order to correct my underbite. the problem is that I don't know if the procedure is going to fix what bothers me the most: there's not enough upper teeth showing when I smile or talk. Is this surgery going to correct that? Or do I need to have another procedure done?

I would speak with the surgeon about whether it will expose more of your upper teeth. I don't think it will, in which case you have two options. You could talk to a plastic surgeon about a lip lift or do porcelain veneers to make the teeth longer. Good luck.

The surgery may correct the lack of tooth display, depending on how the upper jaw is to be oriented. I suggest asking the surgeon what the plan is for your upper arch. Good luck with the surgery. There usually isn't a lot of pain involved but the soft diet for 8 weeks afterward gets tedious.

I think the short answer to your question is talk to your surgeon about your concern, but yes I think the surgery will help with the lack of display of your upper teeth. The long answer has to do with the opposing pull of the muscles of facial expression. The ones that pull the lips down are acting stronger than the ones that pull up. Your chin position has something to do with that, so I think the jaw surgery will help. If you don't get the results after surgery, there is always Botox to control the muscle pull.
