Best type of surgeon for blepharoplasty?

I am very interested in upper and lower blepharoplasty. I am just confused as to which type of surgeon to seek out. I am only considering oculoplastic or facial plastic surgeons. Which one is best for this type of surgery?

Thank you for your question. I suggest that you move forward and consult with a board certified facial plastic surgeon. It is important to evaluate a surgeon based on their years of experience, number of surgeries performed per year, patient testimonials, patient before and after photos, training, education and reputation.

It is best to seek an experienced surgeon that uses minimal invasive technique with natural results. When it comes to lower eyelids, that means transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty with fat repositioning (see following surgical video and website link). Mostly, oculoplastic surgeons use such technique but there are some facial plastics that use it too.

There are several specialties which get training to do blepharoplasty:  Oculoplastics, facial plastics, and plastic surgeons.  When deciding who to go with, make sure you pick someone who does cosmetic eyelid surgery, and not just functional surgery.  Look at their before and after pictures and get a feel for their results.  If you have any unusual eyelid issues or are having a revision, oculoplastics is often the best choice since they have special training in eyelid surgery.

Hello and thank you for your question.  I would recommend that you base your decision on the individual surgeon rather than the type of surgeon. It is very
important that you thoroughly research your surgeon before committing to
surgery. It is a good idea to research your surgeon's educational background,
online reviews, before & after pictures, and speak with anyone who you may
know who has had surgery with that surgeon. During your consultation, make sure
that you don't feel rushed and make sure that you have adequate time with your
surgeon and not just their patient coordinator or nurses. If the majority of
your consultation is spent with someone other than the surgeon, this is usually
not a good sign. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are
comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified
board-certified expert surgeon who can evaluate you in person.

Thank you for your question. I will begin by saying that plastic surgeons, ENT/facial surgeons, and ocular plastic surgeons are all trained in blepharoplasty. The "best" surgeon to do a blepharoplasty is really the one that has the most experience and that you are the most comfortable with. In general however if you are really only considering a facial plastic surgeon vs and ocular plastic surgeon, I would argue that the ocular plastic surgeon likely would be the best option. They are essentially trained in ophthalmology as well as oculoplastics. Hope this helps. Best regards.

While facial plastic surgeons have a more vast background, oculoplastic surgeons might have specialized more in eyelid surgery. I would say that it depends on the specific surgeon. You should find one with the right kind of experience for your particular need and make sure you are comfortable with the surgeon, their understanding of your goals and what you expect from the surgery. Three types of surgeons get training in blepharoplasty: plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons (facial plastic surgery), and ophthalmologists (oculoplastic surgeons).  The important part is not just the training background, but experience.  Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Many surgeons from differing fields of plastic surgery are fantastic blepharoplasty surgeons.  This included oculofacial plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, and general plastic surgeons.  Generally oculofacial plastic surgeons are the busiest and most experienced eyelid surgeons.  Ask for before and after pictures, and look for online reviews if you don't know anyone that has had surgery with the perspective surgeon(s) you are thinking of.  Best regards.
