It is important to evaluate a surgeon based on their years of experience, number of surgeries performed per year, patient testimonials, patient before and after photos, training, education and reputation.

Three types of surgeons get training in blepharoplasty: plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons (facial plastic surgery), and ophthalmologists (oculoplastic surgeons).  The important part is not just the training background, but experience.  Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Plastic and Reconstructive surgery is the original field committed to plastic surgery and that pioneered most of the cosmetic procedure.  While now of days other specialties have fellowships in either oculoplastics and facial plastics that qualify them to perform blepharoplasties, traditional plastic surgeons especially those with Aesthetic fellowships have extensive experience with eyelid and facial surgery.  In fact we typically complete 3  years of plastic training vs 1 year of training required for facial or oculoplastic fellowships.  But find someone you are comfortable with with good before and afters.   

It is best to seek an experienced surgeon that uses minimal invasive technique with natural results. When it comes to lower eyelids, that means transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty with fat repositioning (see following surgical video and website link). Mostly, oculoplastic surgeons use such technique but there are some facial plastics that use it too.
