I had a rhinoplasty 4 weeks ago and came down with a pretty bad cold/flu as of last night. My nose is quite blocked up and tender, and I’m wondering if being sick will increase chances of infection, or if that should be a concern at 4 weeks post-op? Was going to call my surgeon tomorrow to check in, but thought I’d try here first to get some opinions. Thanks!

The development of an upper respiratory infection in the immediate postoperative period can indeed do damage to a rhinoplasty, as normal methods to clear the nasal airway cannot be utilized. Blowing one's nose or nasal sneezing will build up intranasal pressure and can displace the nasal bones. However, at 4 weeks out, the bones have mostly settled in and the risk of injury to these structures is remote. Internal structures have most likely sealed. The risk of infection is quite low.
It still would be wise to inform your plastic surgeon as he / she may have recommendations regarding treatment of the upper respiratory tract infection.
