Is it okay for a nurse practitioner to do Botox? Is it worth exploring this place? GP suggested it?

Hello, I asked my family doctor if she new of any great derms or surgeons that perform botox in Seattle. She gave me a name of a place of a dermologists office. I looked it up to see who would be doing the work, and noticed there are 3 dermatologists 1 astatician and 1 nurse practitioner. In the details I read that the nurse performs botox?? This makes me a bit nervous! Should it?

Hi there and thanks for your question.  Nowadays, it is very common for mid-level practitioners to perform injections.  I suggest doing your own research and find out how experienced the injector is, whether it be a medical doctor or a mid-level.  There are plenty of mid-levels who are extremely experienced with injections so I would not focus on their position but rather their experience. Good question and I would say there are lot of practices where the physicians don't perform the injections but have a mid level provider who does those. I think straight forward injections should not be an issue but if there is any complexity its better to work with a surgeon. Good luck.

However, many offices consider it not work doctor time and have a nurse doing the treatment.  I am sorry, this is asthetic medicine.  I think you should have the attention of a cosmetic surgeon who knows what they are doing.  However, I recognize that is some offices, let's face it, the nurse does a better job than the doctors.  This practice is legal in most states provided the physician has done a good faith examination and ordered the treatment.  When a nurse practitioner is providing treatment, physician supervision rules are even more relaxed.

There are many NPs that perform botox injections. I would be more hesitant with filler but botox if performed in high volume is safe for an NP to do. You can always ask the physician to inject but they may charge you a premium for it. Good luck!

Doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses can all inject Botox if properly trained.  The key is to go to someone with experience and proven results.  Ask for a consultation prior to your treatment.  Ask about experience and to see before/after photos if available.  You will find there are many non-doctors who will be able to provide beautiful Botox treatment results.

NPs are allowed to inject botox in most states. Even nurses inject in many places. I do all of my own injections but I am the ony physician in my city that regularly injects. That is why I think it is funny that many dermatologists/plastic surgeons say to only see a board certified derm/PS because they are almost never the one doing the injections. It is the experience and training that matter rather than the credentials behind the name.
