Do I really have to take muscle relaxant after breast augmentation?

I am almost 2 weeks post op. I did not take flexeril after surgery just percocet for pain. The implants are still very high and kind of oblong. I'm scared that this is the result of not taking muscle relaxant. Im really worried.

Thanks for your inquiry,  I prescrible muscle relaxers for symptoms of muscle spasm, not to influence the final result.  Ask your surgeon about the position of your implants, and best of luck.

The muscle relaxant is helpful if you have pain caused by muscle spasms. It should not affect the way that your augmentation looks. Since there are no pictures I cannot say for sure but I think the shape is most likely due to typical postoperative swelling.

It is certainly not required to use muscle relaxants after augmentation and there is some downsides to every medication. However, I regularly use a muscle relaxant with augmentation in patients who tolerate the medication. I think the use helps decrease the muscle spasm, pain, and implant displacement. This hopefully leads to more comfort, less use of narcotic tablets, and hopefully a sooner perfect position of implants. No way for me to prove any of this, but it seems to work in my patients. Thank you for sharing your question.  Muscle relaxants are useful at minimizing the cramping that can occur with the chest muscle keeping patients more comfortable during recovery.  That said their use will not impact your long-term results created at the time of surgery.  Your tissue swelling is currently maintaining your implants in an elevated and flattened position,  but you should see steady improvement over the next 4-6 weeks as the tissues soften and relax.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for your question.  Muscle relaxers are not necessary after breast augmentation, but they are commonly prescribed to help with pectoralis major muscle spasm pain, which can be experienced if the implant is placed under the muscle.  You definitely would not have to take them if you don't want to.

Muscle relaxant medication is not necessary post breast augmentation. It may help with muscle spasm in the acute post operative period however it should have no effect on your eventual result.

No. The medication purpose is patient comfort after surgery. The muscle relaxants have nothing to do with implant placement. Give that some time for the skin to stretch and see your doctor for the regular follow up visits. Good luck.
