I am trying to decide between silicone and saline implants. I frequently ride horses and I'm worried that if I fall on my chest/ get kicked in the chest it would cause saline implants to rupture. Is this a possibility? Should I opt for silicone instead?

Answer: Breast Augmentation - Saline or Silicone? Thank you for your question. Both saline and silicone implants can withstand significant trauma. I would base the decision more on the goals you are trying to achieve with the implants including a more natural feel, shaped appearance, and minimal chance of rippling. Please discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic breast surgery. Ask to see a lot of pictures of their work. Hope this helps and good luck.

Answer: Both implants are pretty tough I had a patient years ago (10 or more) who rides hunters and jumpers. She was thrown from her horse and landed on her breast with her forearm between her and the ground. She broke her arm. She broke her ribs. She did not break the implant! Having said that, implants are likely not a "lifetime device." It may fail someday. The difference between saline and silicone is that you will know immediately if your saline implant fails -- but most silicone ruptures are silent (like a run flat tire -- you should get it replaced but the timing is not a critical). Good luck!
