Can I get an arm lift with Implanon?

Thank you for your question about getting an arm lift, arm reduction, or brachioplasty with Implanon. I would suggest that the implant be removed before or during surgery. I've often had patients ask me to remove the implant during the surgery. Alternatively, your prescribing doctor can remove the implant in the office. I suggest it be reinserted approximately one month after your arm lift or surgery. It's a relatively straightforward procedure to remove the implant and can be easily incorporated into your brachioplasty. Alternatively, if the arm lift will not affect the implant, you may consider leaving it in place. It has altogether to do with the placement of the implant. Usually, the skin removed is from the intersection between the biceps and the triceps and the six o clock position on the triceps region. This intervening skin is thus removed. It's probably a good idea to wait until after surgery to place it an implant in the arm. Perhaps having a consult with a PS before deciding would be a good idea. Good luck, Aldo.

In my practice we don't require any discontinuation of contraception with surgery however we focus on the prevention of blood clots actively with all surgery patients.  Armlift surgery should not increase your risk more than another type of surgery however you do need to be more careful based on your hormonal contraception during and after surgery to keep the circulation moving in your legs.  

Thank you for your question.  I would recommend waiting until after your armlift and liposuction procedure for a couple of reasons.  Contraceptive hormones can increase your risk of a blood clot after surgery. We usually recommend that you stop them 2-4 weeks before surgery and to use an alternate form of contraception.  Additionally, the procedure will be done in the area where the implants are, so it can be dislodged and lose its effectiveness. Considering that you are planning arm lifting surgery in the near future, I think you may be best off avoiding the placement of the subdermal birth control in the upper arm area. You will be able to have it inserted in the upper arm a few months after the arm lifting surgery has been performed for you.

All surgical procedures carry some risk of blood clots and those risks are higher in patients on birth control. Some operations are higher risk than others, and I would consider the arm lift to be at a lower risk, provided there are not other risk factors. 

The goal is to manage those risks in a sensible way. I would be inclined to leave the implant (unless it is in the skin to be resected), and use sequential compression stockings during and after surgery until you are fully recovered from the anesthetic. Another consideration would be  a few days of an injectable blood thinner. 

A discussion with your surgeon is in order, and consultation with your primary physician can be done if there are issues that are more complex.

All hormonal therapy including birth control pills and implats increase the risk of blood clots.

the risk of patients on hormonal therapy or birth control who are undergoing surgery should stop all hormone therapy for one full cycle before surgery.

You need to discuss this with your surgeon and follow their advise
