I’m in my late 20s and am in the process of losing weight—I’m 15 lbs down and have about 45 to go. I absolutely hate how my breasts look. Weight gain really took a toll on them, and it’s so depressing to see every time I get dressed. I’ve heard you shouldn’t get a breast lift if you still have weight to lose, but is there anything I can do? I can’t stand to look in the mirror.

Answer: Lose weight first It is best to lose any weight you plan to lose before the surgery. If you have a breast lift and lose 45 more lbs you might need a lift revision to tighten the now redundant skin. Also when you are losing weight you are tearing down tissue which we call a catabolic state. That is not a good foundation for healing a new surgery. This is why we ask massive weight loss patients to plateau their weight loss for 3 months before they have their skin tightening surgery, they will heal better. Good luck.

Answer: Late 20s, can I get breast lift while losing weight? If you plan to lose more weight, you should do that before the surgery and get within ten pounds of your ideal weight. That will enable you to get the most optimal cosmetic result and decrease the possibility of you wanting additional surgery in the future because of potential anatomical changes from weight loss. Keep in mind that following advice from a surgeon on this or any other website who proposes to tell you exactly what to do without examining you, physically feeling your tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical history and discussing the pros and cons of each operative procedure would not be in your best interest. I would suggest that you find a surgeon certified by the American Board of American Plastic Surgery and one who is ideally a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Robert Singer, M.D., FACS La Jolla, California
