What bras should I wear after Breast Augmentation?

If an post-operative sports #bra is not provided, we recommend purchasing a couple of basic sports bras for your few weeks of #recovery. Its best to select those which fasten in the front to avoid strain from attempting to reach to your back. It's important to wear this support during recovery and to avoid underwire bras until you have your surgeon's approval.The #bra acts as a “dressing,” holding the breasts in position. If the bra feels too tight or hurts, switch immediately to sports type bra that feels comfortable. You should wear the bra at all times for at least three weeks. Moreover, it is always recommended to call and see your surgeon to discuss your concerns.

Hello,It really doesn't matter as long as it supports without hurting.  There is too much made about how a bra can impact your result.  There just isn't any data to support that claim. So don't worry.  Something comfy and supportive.Best of luck!

Thank you for your question.  It is likely that your surgeon will provide you with a specific garment to wear in the initial postoperative period.  Each surgeon will have his/her own preference in terms of garment guidelines thereafter.  I generally ask patients to keep their postoperative bra for 2 weeks following surgery. At that point, they can switch to a wireless bra (or sports bra) or go braless per their own comfort level.  I ask patients to wait until at least 6 weeks to consider bra shopping for their new bras as the breast size and contour will change during the recovery period.  Good luck!

 Your plastic surgeon should provide you with a post surgical bra that normally is worn for a few weeks after surgery. After that I normally give options that are sports bras without under wire for a total of 6 weeks. 

I recommend that patient wear an underwire bra after breast augmentation surgery.  The reasoning is that the breast needs support and gravity will continue to have an effect on the tissue.  Bras can help to slow the process of breast drooping. 

Every doctor has different post op instructions so you should ask your surgeon what would work for you. The dressings vary from patient to patient. Some patients may be placed in a sports bra; others will wear a stabilizing elastic support strap. Your doctor will decide after surgery and in subsequent weeks, which dressing will suit your needs

Surgeons have different feelings about what, if any, bra should be worn, and when to wear them. It also may depend on exactly wht was done. In general I start my patients on a sport type of bra a week after surgery and they can usually wear whatever they want at three months.

I recommend a good support bra like a sports bra. Absolutely no underwire because it irritates the breast tissue. Once the breasts have healed which generally takes several months, you can get a Victoria Secret bra.

There is a great divergence of opinion on what is the right bra after breast augmentation.  Since everyone is built different there is not one ideal bra for everyone.  Lets just first go over what are not ideal bras.  The breast shape after implant surgery will be affected by external pressures.  If a bra causes pressure in one area of the breast it can change the shape of the breast.  For example is you wear a bra that pushes in on the outside of the breast as many modern bras do this will change the shape of the breast.  Since most women wear their bras 12 hours a day.  The pressure on the outside of the breast will flatten the lateral breast and bulge the medial breast.  This is because lateral pressure causes the internal capsule to shrink on the lateral side and bulge on the medial side.  This is one of the causes of symmastia in my opinion.  Its important to wear a bra that supports the bottom of the breast to prevent descent of the implant (known as bottoming out) without any distortion of the rest of the breast.  Many sports bra and bandeaus simply act as a big elastic band and cause the lateral part of the breast to be compressed and yet not support the shape of the breast.  Its best to measure your breast accurately and wear the correct size bra.  About 80% of women do not wear the right bra.  Most women do not know how to accurately measure their breast size.  Its always best to wear a cup size that is correct or wear a cup size slightly larger than slightly smaller.  The slightly smaller will cause some distortion of the breast and thus change the shape of the breast over time.  I find the Natori brand of bras to fit much better than the Victoria Secret brand.  I find the majority of surgeons have no idea what bras are OK and which ones are not. 

Hello and thank you for your question. Right after surgery, I would follow your surgeon's protocol. He/she may give you a postoperative soft bra to wear. I typically ask my patients to wait about 6 weeks before going to a bra shop that will actually measure you to match you with your new size.
