Is it normal to have hard painful lumps afte Restylane injection?

Question

I had Restylane done three days ago. I had some injected at the corner of my mouth on both sides. I am still swollen, but I also have hard painful lumps inside my bottom lips and where the restylane was injected. I also have a skin tear near the corner of my mouth. It's red and dry. My top lip is fine, but the bottom looks strange and painful. Is this normal?

Thank you for sharing your question. Swelling and tenderness might develop following Restylane injections. This usually subsides within a week. Compresses and massage may hasten recovery. See you doctor is you are still uncomfortable. Good luck,

I am sorry to hear about the painful side effects you are having following your Restylane injections. It is common for patients to swell, bruise, have pain, etc for up to 7 - 14 days following the treatment. You can use cold compresses to help with the swelling and discomfort. Since you are only 3 days out, try to be patient and wait a few more days to see if things improve. However, feel free to call your doctors office and let them know these symptoms you are experiencing. Good luck!

Filler injections carry the risk of small bumps and lumps but are rare with good technique.  However, painful bumps and lumps can be deep bruises, infection or inflammatory nodules.  You should be seen by your physician for evaluation.

This is abnormal and I would ask my provider to be seen. It could be minor bruising but also might indicate an infection which would need antibiotics. It is way too early to see granulomas but this is what they appear as. I now prefer the new Restylane products around mouth such as Refyne and Defyne.

However, Restylane can feel a bit swollen and lumpy after injection, but this usually resolves within 1-2 weeks after injection. It is not common to be developing new lumps 2 weeks after injection. Lumpiness, bruising, swelling, tenderness are all common after filler injections and can last anywhere from 3-14 days. If there as deep bleeding (hematoma) it may last even longer. Ice packs, gentle massage will help. Be patient it will settle down.

I always tell my patients to not love their filler
injections for 2 weeks. Swelling is very common and sometimes immediate. It can
last 3-7 days and a good idea is to use cold compresses. Cold compresses may be
used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling only if needed. This may be
applied for 3 minutes, 3 times per day, for up to 3 days. This is best done
with a bag of peas in a zip lock bag. Only apply light pressure to the area but
gentle massage might be necessary if the bump is from the filler material
itself. Get Arnica gel if you can find some and apply a few times a day as well
to help treat any swelling. Avoid any blood thinners. Bruising can also last
1-2 weeks. I don't recommend hyaluronidase this early and wait a few weeks
until the swelling has resolved. If it is persistent or you are worried, set up
a follow up appointment with your dermatologist.

Swelling and bruising can last for two weeks after Restylane injections in the lips.  Your lumps may need to be massaged so please return to your injector for assessment.

Thank you for your question. It is normal to have some swelling after lip injections with HA, especially in the first few days. Lumps are not uncommon, and usually are not an issue as long as they are not visible. The pain may be due to bruising though it is hard to know without an examination. I recommend you go back to your injector for an evaluation to ensure this is a normal post injections reaction and nothing more.
