I teach classes at the gym. Of course I'm going to take time off to heal, but I'm worried about developing capsular contracture when returning to my workouts. Does working out too soon contribute to capsular contracture?
Answer: CC You should talk to your doctor as only he/she knows your medical history and your treatment plan. Although capsular contractures following breast augmentation can occur just about any time, most women start having symptoms around three months after their breast implant surgery. This is because it takes some time for a capsule to form and then to scar down (contracture).Capsular Contracture is a condition in which the capsule surrounding the implant thickens and contracts, squeezing the implant making it overly firm or hard and often changing the shape and position of the implant. As the capsule contracts it moves the implant further up your chest wall making upper portion of your breast too large and unshapely. It is more far more common in nicotine users (e.g. smoking, vaping or nicotine gum or patches).

Answer: Capsular contracture No is really sure what causes capsular contracture. Exercise probably is not a factor, but you should clear resumption of exercise with your surgeon.

Answer: Avoid Early Trauma to Reduce Capsular Contracture Risk Capsular contracture, or firming of the breasts is known to be associated with several risk factors. One of these is accumulation of bloody fluid around your breast implants. This can be caused by early trauma following surgery, such as pectoral exercises, running, falling, etc. It is important to let you breasts heal for a few weeks before working out. Please check with your doctor to review their recommendations.

Answer: Capsular contracture and excercise. Thank you for your question.I am unaware of any evidence that excercise, per sae, causes capsular contracture.Infact gentle, routine and regular displacement exercises are felt by many to help prevent capsular contracture when smooth walled implants are used.Early, aggressive, high impact type excercise in the early post operative peroid may increase fluid/blood release around the implant which can create a matrix for early unwanted scar (capsule) and which may lead to capsular contracture. I suggest you ask your Plastic Surgeon specifically what his/hers post operative protocol for excercise is.Hopefully your Plastic Surgeon is Cert. by the Am. Bd. of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the Am. Soc. for Aesthsestic Plastic Surgery (denoting by membershipas having met additional criteria and a focus on Cosmetic Plastic Surgery). My best,

Answer: Excercise and Contraction Exercise does not contribute to capsular contraction. Don't worry about it, and after healing has progressed (3-4 weeks), go for it.Malcolm Lesavoy, MD
