Will insurance pay for some of my mommy makeover since I have an umbilical hernia?

Yes!  Combining procedures like a hernia repair or hysterectomy with other procedures like a tummy tuck or mommy makeover can save a lot of money and recovery time.  As long as it's done safely, it makes good sense combining the procedures and having one recovery period versus doing everything separately and having multiple recovery times spaced out months apart.  Even more, as long as you get prior authorization from your insurance company for certain procedures, doing them with other ones can save money when it comes to paying for anesthesia and facility fees.

The umbilical hernia can be repaired at the time of the TT in most instances.  The TT will not be covered by insurance, but hernia repair typically is (though the reimbursement is pathetic). You will be responsible for the deductible. Recommend healing from the partial hysterectomy before having the TT and umbilical repair.

In my experience, this never works as well as patients hope that it will.  Insurance carriers are smart and time everything in the operating room, so that the insurance part of the surgery is separated from the cosmetic part.  Typically, the operating room expenses are more expensive at a hospital.  In the long run, it is probably safer and more cost effective to have the hysterectomy at one setting, then have the tummy tuck and hernia repair (which most plastic surgeons just do as part of the tummy tuck) at a separate setting.  Good luck to you.

 I appreciate your concern, however I do believe you have options. You may be able to have the hernia repair and partial hysterectomy at the same time as your tummy tuck. However it may be tricky because three separate surgeons are needed; general surgeon for your hernia, gynecologist for your hysterectomy and plastic surgeon for your tummy tuck. I have performed Tummytuck at the same time as hysterectomy many times successfully. The hernia surgery may possibly be done as well. Coordination of the three surgeons is key.The advantage is that OR and anesthesia costs will be covered in part by insurance because the hernia and hysterectomy are Medically necessary. Doing them simultaneously will decrease the cost of your tummy tuck.  It is best to meet which with each of the surgeons and discuss the possibility of performing all three operations at once. I do not recommend any other type of surgery, like breast surgery at the same time however. Be certain to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon for the tummy tuck portion of your surgery. Good luck.

Much will depend on the “comfort level” of your plastic surgeon;  in my practice, I repair hernias routinely during tummy tuck surgery. Some plastic surgeons prefer to  ask for the services of a general surgeon.  Sometimes,  hernia repairs are covered by insurance companies; you will need to check with your specific insurance company. Insurance will only pay for procedures which are medically necessary.  That would not include the tummy tuck regardless if you have diastasis.  The umbilical hernia repair can often be combined with the tummy tuck.  It may be best to have the hysterectomy separate from these procedures.  See a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.

In NY, the insurance carriers are much tougher about combining cosmetic with medically necessary surgeries because they understand that the cosmetic intent is an overriding factor.  The clock gets started on the cosmetic portion which is billed at the hospital’s full tariff.  It’s actually more costly to the patient,

Thank you for your question. Yes, your insurance company will pay for the umbilical hernia repair, and part of the Anesthesia and Operating Room costs associated with the TT. As for the partial Hysterectomy, that depends on what actually needs to be performed. I would suggest you seek out a consultation from a board certified plastic surgeon in your area, and have a consultation. The plastic surgeon can discuss what is needed with your Gynecologic surgeon and decide if combining is appropriate.
