Will my lips get as swollen the second time I get Juvederm injections?

Each individual will respond differently. My patients often have swelling for a few days and do not really describe any discomfort long term from the injections.

Thank you for your excellent question.  Swelling is common after treatment with Juvederm, especially when the lips are injected.  You can expect a similar response with your second injection.  I recommend that my patients ice the area for up to 48 hours after the treatment in order to minimize normal postprocedure swelling.  Arnica is also helpful for minimizing normal postprocedure swelling and bruising, if present.  Please be sure to see an expert injector for an in-person consultation to fully discuss your goals and expectations in order to determine the best treatment plan.  Hope this helps and best wishes! 

Swelling of any tissue, especially the lips, can Swelling can be expected after injection of any tissue, especially the lips.  HA, hyaluronic acid, which we all have in our bodies, absorbs water and causes swelling.  In addition the body reacts to almost any injection by inflammation, including swelling.  The bruising or even hematoma after insertion of the injection needle will add to the swelling.  Finally the quantity of filler used will add to the fullness.  Swelling can be limited by various means including ice, elevation, compression, avoiding anything such as aspirin before injection that can cause increased bleeding and other means.  Unless there is an allergic component to the swelling, it is unlikely that a second treatment will have an increased tendency to swell

Hello and thanks so much for your question!! Swelling can occur post lip injection no matter how many times you've had the procedure done. Any type of puncture has the potential to create swelling or perhaps even bruising. I prepare all of our injectable patients to expect this as a precaution and to avoid any surprises!! Some swelling following lip filers is completely normal and it will likely last 3-4 days.   But,  can last longer.   Lots of icing at least for a few minutes every few hours following injections will help reduce swelling.   Typically you'll find less swelling in subsequent injections and for a shorter duration.  Have fun with it.   Lip injections are the bomb! 

It is very normal for lips to swell after injections.  Usually, this diminishes in 3-4 days, but it certainly can last up to several weeks.  It is impossible to know if you will react the same way you did last time or if it will be better this time.  I recommend gently holding ice to your lips for about 5 minutes each hour for 2-3 days after the injections.  This can help to reduce the swelling.  You can also apply arnica cream 4-6 times daily, which will reduce inflammation.
