How long does Juvederm XC last as a lip filler?

I recently got juviderm xc lip injections. I was told by the doctor it lasts about a year...then the other lady in the room said it was "9 months to a year," and now on here and other places online I have seen surgeons saying it lasts 4-8 months, 9 months, a year..which one is it? I understand it varies from person to person but 4 months and a year are not even close.

Hello.  You're right that all this information can be a bit confusing.  While everyone's metabolism will ultimately determine how long a filler lasts, in general--Juvederm Ultra XC or Ultra Plus XC usually lasts 6-9 months.  Perhaps a year if you're lucky, and 4 months is possible if your metabolize the filler quickly or you have more motion in your lips than others.  Allergan has a new lip filler using their Vycross technology--Volbella-- that is great for subtle lip enhancement and smoothing fine perioral lines, and this lasts about 18 months.  Bear in mind, this data is from their studies.  In any study, there is a range of duration results, but their results showed a mean of 18 months duration.  You could last shorter, or longer, but I think a year is reasonably certain.  If you're interested in getting lip fillers, I recommend you seek a board certified cosmetic doctor with experience injecting the lips.  Take care.

So fillers and longevity is an area of dispute for many patients and surgeons. In my experience, when placed around mobile areas such as the lips and eyes which you use every minute, they go away a bit quicker.  I tell patients for the lips it is about 6-9 months. Another variable is your metabolism though. Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Dermal filler duration will depend not only the amount and type of filler injected but also your inherent metabolism.  Juvederm makes several products that can be used in the lips including Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Vollure.  The former two can last from 4-8 months while the latter is described as lasting 18.  Highly mobile areas of the face, like the lips, tend to have filler dissolve faster than other portions.  See an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to discuss.

Juvederm XC is FDA approved for up to a year.  My experience in the lips is that it lasts about 8 months.  The newer fillers, Vollure and Volbella last much longer and feel much more natural!

Hello misslny,Juvederm Ultra XC can last up to a year.  That does not mean you would notice the full result for a year, but if you did a biopsy of the treated area a year from now you would likely find filler present.  The actual time a filler will last depends on where it is injected (mobile areas will dissolve filler faster), your metabolism (the filler is broken down by the body), and the filler chosen.  On the early side if you do metabolize the product quickly it may only last 4 months.  But on average you are looking around 6-9 months in the lips.  Some may have the product result for longer and some shorter.  I hope this helps and good luck.
