Breast Reduction surgery in a hospital vs a surgical center/office surgical suite?

Will most board-certified surgeons perform a breast reduction in a hospital if requested? What is the approximate cost difference between having it done in a hospital versus a surgical center? Safety is a top priority for me. Thank you!

You can have your breast reduction performed either in the hospital operating room or a certified outpatient surgery center. Certification could be JAHCO, AAAASF or medicarHospital operating room for outpatient operating room for production?e certified.   In either one of these facilities safety is a priority. Make sure that your procedure is crying in one of these types of facilities.

In healthy patients breast reduction in the hospital is probably not a good idea. However, the ambulatory surgery center off the hospital campus should be properly accredited.

Our first concern is safety as well. A breast reduction can be done safely in any of the above named facilties. A hospital is more expensive and most surgeons will do the procedure there if your insurance covers the procedure. If it is not covered, can be done in an accredited in office surgery suite. This is more cost effective for the patient. I routinely do these in my office under intravenous sedation or smaller reductions/lifts under local anesthesia with minimum oral sedation. If the hospital or surgical center are licensed and accredited then they should measure up to the latest in safety standards. Your board certified plastic surgeon should recommend the most suitable facility in which to perform your breast reduction surgery and is best able to give you the cost information as this can vary widely among different facilities.

is usually left up to the discretion of your surgeon.  Good surgeons recognize when their patients should be done in the hospital and this usually involves arterial lines, central lines, obesity, and in general, poor health where an admission to the hospital may be needed.  The vast majority of reductions are done out-patient, and some facilities do still use their hospital OR's.  Outpatient surgery centers are safe and more efficient.

Thank you for the question.Congratulations on your decision to undergo breast reduction surgery; it is one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. As long as your surgeon thinks is a well experienced board-certified plastic surgeon working with a board-certified anesthesiologist and a fully accredited surgery center or hospital you should be safe.  Personally,  I prefer to do the procedure in a fully accredited outpatient surgery center working with the same team on a consistent basis. If your surgeon is using an accredited surgical center and a board certified anesthesiologist, the safety factor is equivalent. The big difference - no hospital bacteria from seriously sick patients in the surgical center. The cost difference is in the thousands sometimes.
