How to talk to doctor about breast reduction?

I want to start probing my doctor to find out if I'm a candidate for breast reduction. I don't even know where to start. Is that something you schedule an appointment soley for or bring up randomly. I guess I just am curious of how that is initiated.

comfortable answering whatever questions you have, but ultimately, you’ll want

to guide you through the process, let you know exactly what your options are
and what to expect.

Breast reduction is a very common procedure so you should not be nervous about initiating a conversation about it with your doctor. I recommend finding a board certified plastic surgeon in your area who has a lot of experience with breast reduction procedures and make an appointment for a consultation with him/her. Your plastic surgeon will actually guide the conversation asking about specific health issues related to the size of the breast. He will inform you about the specifics of the operation including the technique, risk,, lessons and long-term expectations. If they are things that you want to know about breast reduction right them down in case there not covered by your discussion with the surgeon.

Thank you for the question.  For the right patient, breast reduction surgery tends to be one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. I would suggest starting with the American Society of Plastic Surgery and/or the Aesthetic Society of Plastic Surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons.
Then, I would suggest you visit a few surgeons whose practices concentrate on aesthetic surgery. Ask to SEE lots of examples of their work AND preferably speak/see patients who have had similar procedures done.It will also be important to learn about the pros/cons/possible risks/complications associated with the procedure. If you are referring to your family doctor, you can tell them the issues you are having with your breasts (weight, bra strap pain, shoulder pain, etc.) and ask if they know a plastic surgeon who they would recommend.  If you are talking about the plastic surgeon, you can check with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).  They can give you a list of the board certified plastic surgeons in your area who perform breast reduction surgery.  Your surgeon will examine you and review the procedure with you.  ask to see before and after photos of patients who have had a breast reduction.
