10 units of Botox enough for masseter slimming?

10 units of Botox is unlikely to give you much slimming along your jawline. I can only assume that your injector is fairly inexperienced with treating this area. The upside is that more can be added at a future visit without reducing the overall effect of treatment. Best.Stephen Weber MD, FACS

10 units of Botox per masseter muscle is a small amount to see a significant difference, you can add another 15 units per side and that will give you a more significant change, do not wait that long for another session of Botox and try to get it in the first 2 weeks after the first session.

Thank you for asking. 10 units is a fairly minor dosage. More would most likely have a better chance of effectiveness although temporarily. Something else to consider- buccal fat pad excision in some patients can slim down areas permanently. This is a minor procedure that is effective in good candidates. Hope this helps.

In korea they are using 60 units per each side, I start with 30 and wait 3-6 weeks to consider more.  10 units likely will not give much of a result, but if does, the results will likely only be short lived.  Best of luck, Dr. Emer.

For Masseter hypertrophy treatment you typically need 25-35 units per side, 20 units in some faces.  Re-treat again in 6 months for optimal results.  10 units per side will probably not be enough but if you add more units within 6 weeks it will be additive to what you already had.  If you were just charged per unit it shouldn't cost you any more to treat over 2 treatments vs. the same total amount given in one visit, just the inconvenience of 2 visits.

The range of botox for the masseter muscle can be anywhere from 10 units per side up to 40-50 units depending on the size of the masseter, and the amount of improvement the patient wants.It is ok to add additional botox to improve your results.Would recommend you speak with your provider.

Thank you for your question! Injecting the masseter muscles typically requires a higher dose of Botox as these muscles are thick and have a larger mass. On average, we inject 30 units of Botox per masseter, with patients asked to return in 2 weeks for a followup to determine if any additional units are necessary. This dose should be adjusted by your injector based on the size of your muscles. Your injector may have started with a lower dose to be cautious if it is your first time receiving injections to this area, but I do not believe 10 units will be sufficient to achieve a slimming effect.

I agree with the other responders that larger amounts of Botox need to be used, often 30 units per side. With that being said, if you had 10 units the first time, and returned a week later for another 15 units, that would come out to the same as if you had received 25 units at once (as long as the injections are spaced apart the same way).

Thanks for your question. The studies that have looked at this use a lot more Botox than you received. In my practice, we start with 25 units per side. Patients are asked to come back at two weeks and frequently they then receive another 25 units per side if the masseter muscle is still able to contract. You won't see much in the way of countouring until a month or two after the muscle has stopped moving. The masseter is a big muscle, so it's going to take a lot of Botox to make it stop moving. If you were my patient, I'd do 25 units per side the next time I saw you.

To atrophy the masseter, and thus change the shape of the face in this area, 15-20 units of Botox can be introduced to the muscle.  10 units is probably too little to achieve a noticeable effect.  You will likely need further treatment to notice a change in your facial contour using this method.  As always, make sure that your Dermatologist has plenty of experience using Botox to decrease the size of the masseter. This will ensure the best results with the fewest side effects.
