How often does Botox need to be administered to reduce the masseter muscles for face shaping?

In korea they use 60 units per side.  I start with 30 units per side and have patients return in 4-6 weeks for a second treatment if they need.  The results can be long lasting if you continue the treatments.  Some people do 20 units per side every 2-4 weeks till you get the size/shape you are looking for.  Please see someone with experience.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Botox for the masseter muscle can take 2-3 treatments to notice a real difference.The reason is that unlike treating wrinkles by relaxing the muscle, with Botox you are trying to achieve muscle atrophy (shrinking of the muscle from inactivity).  This is what achieves the change in the appearance.In order to get the muscle to atrophy, you need to keep it inactive for some length of time-- this will vary depending on the individual.Most importantly, talk to your surgeon to establish that the masseter is the source of your problem.

Botox takes about a week to even begin having an
effect. The masseter is only partially weakened as it is needed for
chewing. Therefore, often it will take several months and possibly a few
treatments to see a real noticeable difference for facial shaping.

Masseter muscle atrophy can be achieved with Botox injections.  20 units is an appropriate initial dose. You'll want to achieve the desired cosmetic result gradually.  Often times, multiple injections are needed to reduce the size of the muscle as desired.  Make sure your Dermatologist has a lot of experience using Botox to improve facial contour by inducing atrophy of the masseter.  This will ensure best results with fewest side effects.

After you have achieved adequate reduction in the size of your masseters, you will probably need maintenance treatments every 4 - 10 months depending on how long it takes the muscle to build back up after the Botox wears off.

It takes longer than two weeks to see results following Botox jawline shaping. I think your one month followup is an appropriate time to check in with your physician injector. In most cases, my patients return every 6 - 12 months for a touch up and maintenance of their jaw slimming results. Generally you see mild changes after the first set of injections, but more so after the second treatment bc of more atrophy of the muscles. Also, there are thing you can do to help maintain and get the results u want. Avoid chewing gum and chewy candies and wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. All of these "chewing" motions increase the bulk of the muscles the botox is trying to shrink!

Good Morning and thank you for your question.  Generally you will see more of a noticeable change after the second treatment and more so after the third.  The Botox needs time to start controlling and relaxing the movement of the muscle so the muscle itself will lessen in bulk, enhancing the shape of your face.  Best of Luck!Dr. K.
