Is there a way to use Dysport or Botox to raise corners of the mouth without taking away ability to pucker?

Question

I have had dysport in corners of mouth as well as above the lip to provide a lift and like the aesthetics of it but lost ability to pucker or suck out of a straw. Became difficult to eat and drink as a result. What do you recommend?

The short answer is that we are able to raise the corners of the mouth with Botox or Dysport by small injections of the product to the depressor anguli oris muscles on the right and left sides.  This muscle pulls the corners of the mouth down (simulating a frown); therefore, Botox or Dysport to the muscles will naturally lift the corners of the mouth.  Puckering should be maintained because the muscle that controls puckering (orbicularis oris muscle) is not treated.Best of luck!

Thank you for your question!  Yes, both Dysport and Botox can be used to help elevate the corners of the mouth.  When injected into the depressor muscles of the lips, it will help to elevate the corners.  I would consult with a board certified and expert injector for evaluation.  As you have mentioned, one of the possible side results is difficulty with puckering.  However, with appropriate placement of the neuromodulator, this should not happen.  I hope that this helps!-David Gilpin

Thank you. Yes, you can inject into the depressor muscle at the corner of the mouth and this should not affect the ability to pucker your lips. I like to use a combination of Dysport or Botox and a dermal filler to get best results on the corner of the mouth. Best wishes, Dr. ALDO

If you forgo the Botox injection above the mouth, it won't take away your ability to pucker. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist to go over your desired results. Best, Dr. Emer

Elevation of the mouth corners can be accomplished with Dysport or other neuromodulators.  This should not effect the ability to pucker.  Sometimes these products are used for vertical lip lines or to evert the lip which can affect the ability to pucker or use a straw.  Mouth corners may also benefit from a small amount of filler to make a bigger difference.  Best of luck.

The Dysport injection to the upper lip is what probably caused you to not be able to pucker your lips. If you avoid the injection to the lips, and just have Dysport or Botox injection to the DAO muscle, then the corners of the mouth will upturn and you will not have difficult with puckering. Often times, the best result, when it comes to the corners of the mouth, is achieved using both hyaluronic acid based fillers such as Juvederm in combination with Botox/Dysport.

Thank you for your question. Yes this can be done. This can be done with an injection into the DAO muscle. Not being able to pucker is related to injections around the mouth, such as above the lip. If this injection is not done you should be able to pucker. I recommend having a consultation with an expert injector to determine the best treatment plan for you.

there is way to use medications like Botox or Dysport to raise corner of mouth however results will be subtle. To get better results minimal support from HA fillers like Restylane or juvaderm goes a long way.

When investing Botox or Dysport a knowledge of facial anatomy is essential. Intuitively one may thing the tiny muscles at the mouth corners are pulling the mouth down but in reality that muscle resides at the sides of the chin. It is the Depressor Anguli Oris or DAO and can be felt by holding your sides of the chin in your thumb and index finger and making the pout mouth. Feel the little muscle get hard? Thats the muscle to be injected.

If you inject the lips then drinking from a cup , slurping off a spoon and puckering will be difficult for a few months.

This is done with injection in the DAO muscle. The problem with puckering is related to the injections around the mouth.(above the lip). If this injection is excluded, you should be able to pucker.
