How soon after hysterectomy can I get a tummy tuck with lipo?

Question

I am going in for a vaginal hysterectomy in November. I would also like to get a tummy tuck with lipo after. I do not want to do the 2 surgeries together. Quite frankly I am nervous about general anesthesia and do not want to be under longer than I should! How soon can I safely get a tummy tuck with lipo after my hysterectomy?

I recommend my patient complete properly the healing process of the previous surgery in order to have another one. It depends on each patient, most of the time is between 6 months and one year.

There clearly are a variety of opinions with regard to your question and there is no one correct answer for everyone. You want to make sure that you heal well enough from your hysterectomy before proceeding with the tummy tuck. It is also important that you are nutritionally in a good state to provide you with the best chances of healing and minimizing the risk of wound and other problems. In general, my recommendation is to wait somewhere between 3 and 6 months before undergoing the tummy tuck.Steven Turkeltaub, MD

Thank you for your question.  There is no correct answer for this question and the decision is ultimately between you, your gynecologist and your plastic surgeon.  In addition, the decision will depend on how smoothly your initial procedure went, were there complications, etc...In my experience two months after an uncomplicated vaginal hysterectomy should be adequate.

Great question. I have a number of patients who come in asking the same thing. I always advise to wait a minimum of three months after your hysterectomy before proceeding with tummy tuck surgery. I know waiting is a pain, but it will allow for the best long term results with the lowest amount of risk. Good luck.

I recommend patients wait a minimum of 3-6 months to recover from an uncomplicated major surgery. General anesthesia is safe for healthy patients but many surgery centers will request a medical clearance and physician evaluation in order to minimize any expected risks from anesthesia.
