My lips are bruised and swollen 4 days after juvederm. What should I do? (Photo)

Bruising and swelling after lip injections are common even with the best of injectors .  I would recommend that you give yourself 2 weeks to let the swelling subside and the bruises to fade.  If at that point you are still unhappy with your results i would return to your injector to discuss your concerns.  Best of Luck

Thank you for the photo.  Sometimes there may be some contour irregularities after injection.  This can be due to the product placement, bruising, or other issues.  You are very early in your post procedure course.  In our office, we usually wait 10 to 14 days before seeing a patient back as we know there will be swelling.  Swelling can be present for a while, even longer if there was any bruising.  Often contour irregularities can be smoothed out.  Please let your well trained, experienced injector know about your concerns. 

I suggest you wait for two weeks, as this will allow enough time to pass for swelling and bruising to resolve. In the meantime, you may want to ice the area for a few minutes hourly and avoid touching the area. Also, avoid any medications/supplements that would encourage bruising, such as Vitamin E, St. John's Wort and aspirin.

experience swelling and bruising after filler injections into the lips, however
this should resolve in the next 2 weeks. I always advise my patients to ice the
treated area to help resolve swelling in the lips. Please consult your injector if this persists

It can take two weeks for any bruising or swelling to resolve after Juvederm lip injections.  If you are not happy with your results at that time, please return to your injector for assessment.

Thanks for your question, and sorry that you are having this kind of bruising following your Juvederm injections. As has been noted, swelling and some bruising can occur post-filler injections and for the most part, this goes away fairly quickly in most people. This concern should not last more than 7-10 days in most people, and using ice is one of your best options to minimize the swelling and bruising you are having. We always recommend you have your injections given by an office of a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon – these groups know more about the anatomy of the lips and how to minimize these events, but know that they still can occur. One thing to consider is if you can get into an office that has a pulsed dye laser, this can be used at this time and a great deal of this bruising can be handled in this manner.

My first thought is were you on any blood thinning medications or supplements that could have lead to the increased bruising?  I agree that your top lip looks too full/duck-like but maybe that is due to unresolved swelling/bruising... give it a few more days to see if it improves. We do use a pulse-dye laser to clear bruises much faster.

Bruising and slight swelling after juvederm is normal, but should last no more than a week. My solution for you is to dab the swollen area with some concealer and wait a few more days for the results to start showing. Wait a couple more days, and if the results are not to your liking, your primary care physician should know. Any filler can result in bruising and swelling when injected, although if you have an expert injector such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, they likelihood of bruising and swelling and problems in general is much lower. Likely the bruising will settle down in 7-10 days, but if you're concerned, go see your doctor ASAP.

Your concern is understandable. However, swelling and bruising are common side effects after lip injections, even if you didn't have them previously, and they will subside. The lips take about 2 weeks to settle with the new product in them. If you're still concerned, then consult your injector. Yes, laser may help.Knowing how to reduce bruising and swelling prior to your next injection may help avoid them altogether. You can minimize bruising by not consuming certain ingredients that cause bruising such as green tea, ginger, and over-the-counter supplements like Omega‑3 pills. Icing the lips immediately after injections and repeated sessions of icing on the lips for the first 24 hours can help relieve symptoms quicker. Elevated sleeping the first night is recommended to reduce any swelling in the face and lips. A homeopathic remedy such as Arnica, which is available at most drug stores, can also be taken in oral form prior to your appointment and be applied topically after.
