I recently got juvaderm for the first time 5 days ago. The first night it was beautiful. My lips looked great. Then the following morning when I woke up, not only was I bruised (which I know is normal) but my upper lip on the left side was saggy. The upper left side was the only part of my lip that was bruised. I went back and they said when the bruising went away my lip should lift back up. Is this true? This couldn't be something permanent right?
Answer: Swelling is mild, it should resolve with time. Bruising and asymmetries can frequently happen early on after Juvederm injection. Usually the amount of bruising is mild and resolves quickly, but it is more likely if you have had any medicines that thin your blood within a couple weeks of injection. Medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin and Aleve are particularly noted to thin the blood and allow for bruising. Also, many of the herbal medicines/supplements (like flaxseed, fish oil, garlic, and St. John’s wort.) have the same blood thinning properties. Even some vitamins in excess to that… for example, an excess of 100% of the daily allowance of vitamin E will produce the same probability of bruising. Stopping those medicines for 2 weeks prior to injection has helped our patients reduce the incidence and severity of bruising and produce more predictable results. The ‘drooping’ of your lip is the extra blood in the tissue that swells and distorts the tissue. This should be better as that blood metabolizes and is absorbed, but that may take a couple of weeks. In extreme cases where there is a lot of bleeding in the tissue, the blood actually put enough pressure on the fat cells that is kills those cells and once the swelling goes down you are left with a thinning of the tissue and indentation.(This is something we obviously we want to avoid at all costs.)The amount of swelling and bruising that you have is mild, and I would expect it to resolve completely over time without leaving any permanent deformity.

Answer: The Bruises Will Resolve I am sorry you had a bruise following your procedure — and once the bruise has resolved, the area should go back to normal. I would recommend you follow up with your provider if you have any concerns – but I think in the end everything will be fine.

Answer: Bruising after Juvederm Dear arusty21, The bruising and swelling are most likely adding to your current complaints. Once this dissipates then you can reevaluate your result. This is not permanent. Best regards, Michael V.Elam, M.D.

Answer: My top lip is bruised and sagging. If the lip is bruised, it most likely has swelling in it. Once the bruising and swelling are gone, you can reevaluate it. Juvederm is a temporary filler, and will dissolve with time.
