While there is always a chance of infection, this should be very low. Things you can do include taking antibiotics postoperatively, stopping smoking, controlling any other medical issues such as diabetes, etc. Really, this advice should be tailored for each patient, so discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Best of luck!!Dr. SubbioBoard-Certified Plastic SurgeonNewtown Square/Philadelphia, PA
Hello! Surgical Site Infection protocols have changed. Now there is a recommendation for increased numbers of showers with a surgical soap like Hibiclens. Also the newest recommendation includes anti-staph treatment with Muperocin ointment in the umbilicus. Of course you will get a dose of IV antibiotics just prior to your surgery starting. Good luck.
You are best to eat a balanced diet. If you are diabetic, you want to maintain good control of your sugars.
There is nothing you can do toavoid the chance for infection, but I instruct my patients to do things that Ithink can help. It is helpful if youshower with an antibacterial deodorant soap before coming in, and I also ask mypatients to trim their own pubic hair. It always helps to be at a healthyweight and in good nutrition, and one thing everyone should do is stop smokingand avoid contact with tobacco products.
I have a minor disagreement with Dr. McMahan. Studies have shown that surgeries performed in office OR suites that are accredited by national accrediting agencies (e.g. AAAASF or JAACO) are just as safe as those performed in ambulatory surgery centers. So as long as your surgeon is board certified and the office OR is accredited, you are in good hands. Good luck.
Thank you for your question. Infections with tummy tucks are relatively rare. You should receive an intravenous dose of an antibiotic just prior to surgery. Taking a shower using a medical antibiotic soap like hebiclens the night before surgery can help. Have your surgery done in an accredited ambulatory surgery center rather than an office OR or a hospital can reduce the risk of infection. Be sure to go to an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon.
Thank you for your question. You are right, a belly button can be a give away of previous surgery. We all strive to recreate a normal looking belly button and this depends on technique used, patient's ability to heal (infection, partial necrosis, scarring ability). I prefer to use an upside down...
Keloid formation can happen to any wound and any race. There are places where the scars are more prone for this like earlobes, sternal area (between breast) and shoulders. Most surgeons close the incision in several layers to decrease tension on the scar and also help heal it as a...
Hi, Angel1981txSorry to hear about your problems. I do not think your symptoms have risen from complication of abdominoplasty. Based on your description, you may have incarcerated hernia. You should see a gastroenterologist or general surgery to be evaluated ASAP.Good luck.
