Woke up with extremely sore/swollen left breast. How likely is infection? (Photo)

Question

I had surgery 6 weeks ago. 800cc under the muscle with a lift. My recovery was going extremely well and I randomly just woke up with a sore/swollen left breast. Hurt so badly. I ran a slight fever today, took ibuprofen and brought my temp down back to normal. Called the surgery nurse and she didn't seem bothered, she said she would "run it by" my surgeon to see if I should come in. As if rudeness and an attitude makes me feel any better. How likely is it to randomly get an infection overnight?

I’m sorry to hear that your concerns weren’t addressed sympathetically by the nurse. If they don’t get back to you please call them again to schedule an appointment with your surgeon. The pain, fever and swelling should be examined by your surgeon to rule out a complication.

With your symptoms and your concern, you should schedule an in-person evaluation with your doctor. That's what's necessary to determine if an infection exists. You should insist on being evaluated. Increasing pain, swelling, and redness--especially when accompanied by fever--are always of concern to a plastic surgeon regardless of when they occur following augmentation (or any other procedure!).  Best to be examined by your surgeon as soon as possible.  Best of luck to you!

With sudden onset swelling that has changed the shape of the breast, you should contact your doctor to be evaluated in person. You may have a seroma, hematoma. or infection developing.
