Weight gain after liposuction. Will weight loss be harder or the same as before?

In most cases of weight loss, the buttocks and other areas with stored fat will become smaller.  About 50% of the fat that is transferred lives and becomes a part of you.  This will hold stable as long as there is no weight fluctuation.  The fat will not move, but losses in weight will distribute differently.  The fat that lives in the buttocks from the procedure will get larger with weight gain and smaller with weight loss.Adding an exercise program will help with the weight loss and reduce the stress encountered in medical school and residency.

With proper diet and exercise you should be able to lose the weight. Having liposuction previously will not make it more difficult to lose weight. Best, Dr. Emer

Kittyloo  Please don’t beat yourself up because you gained weight during a very stressful, sedentary time of your life. Weight fluctuation is common, even in the most fit individuals. The most important factor is that you recognize it and are willing to resume your diet and exercise regimen to remedy the situation. Your previous liposuction procedure has no bearing on the weight gain or ensuing weight loss. Study hard and stay on track. Good luck.

Thanks for the question, our metabolism does not change with liposuction. Weight gain happens to all of us from time to time during periods of stress and there is nothing wrong with that. It sounds like you are focused on losing the weight with diet and exercise which is fantastic. Liposuction removes localized fat deposits, but it doesn’t prevent weight gain in other areas. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise is crucial. Weight loss efforts should be similar to before, but individual responses can vary. Consult with your healthcare provider for recommendations.

Having had previous liposuction should not change your ability to gain or lose weight at any different rate.  The fat will just tend to goto areas where you haven't had liposuction.  We wary - liposuction is not a weight loss procedure & should really only be used for pockets of fat that are out of proportion to other areas.

It should be no different to lose the weight now. Medical school is stressful but not as stressful as residency so it would be great for you to lose and maintain now before those overnights and access to junk food really set in. Lose carefully and consistently to reduce the potential for sagginess. Best wishes!
