What is the best procedure to reduce the appearance of a dowagers hump or buffalo hump? (Photo)

Question

For years i have noticed a lump on my back & it kind of lower my confidence. Sometimes it hurts. As years go by it seems like the lump is getting worse. My mom also has it so I’m thinking it’s genetic. Today, i finally figured the actual name & discovered something called dowagers hump or buffalo hump. I really would like to know what would be the best procedure to reduce the appearance of this hump on my neck so i can rock my short hair styles with confidence again.. Thanks

sometimes the hump is pretty well defined and sometimes its not. the first question I would like to find the answer to is: 1. is it a Lipoma (fatty tumor) or merely a collection of excess fat? the treatment for either is different. but you need to be evaluated in person for any sort of treatment

TeeannaS.  I understand your concerns and while photos would help, it does appear that you are describing the so-called buffalo hump deformity. This is a well-defined collection of fat of the upper back centrally just below the neck that causes an obvious hump. I have successfully treated many of these deformities with liposuction alone. It is by far the best option. Come see me or another board-certified plastic surgeon in the area to explore the best options for you. Good luck.

best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation.  Posterior neck fullness can often benefit from liposuction of this area.  This decision should
be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you
and your surgeon.   Make sure you specifically look
at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery
performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.   The most
important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend
that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who
can evaluate you in person.

Thank you for posting your interesting question. Liposuction can safely and effectively remove a collection of back fat called a dowager's or buffalo hump using a small incision. I recommend that you have a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who is experienced with liposuction, who has the proper skill set and liposuction equipment. At the time of your consultation, you will have a detailed history and physical exam, discuss your goals, have all of your questions answered to your satisfaction and review dozens of the plastic surgeon's before and after liposuction results. Sometimes a buffalo hump can be suctioned.  Sometimes it needs to be directly excised. Sometimes it is related to the curvature of the spine. Best to be seen in person.

Thanks for your question. You do need to be evaluated by your primary physician to be sure this not the result of a medical condition (some adrenal gland abnormalities can cause this). After that has been cleared, then liposuction is probably the next step. If that does not take care of it, the fatty tissue can be removed directly, but it would require a scar.
