Is my severe bruising normal after breast augmentation? I had my silicone textured implant surgery done 9 days ago. (Photos)

My brushing is severe specifically on one side. Still very soar. Wearing compression band and developedore brushing from it. Brushing does down my rib cage. I do normally bruise easily, just concerned about CC developing. 1 WK post op showed no main concern but advised to keep taking Arnica, use compression band and start massaging. Please help.

Hello and thank you for your question. Looking at your photographs, your breasts are within normal range of swelling and bruising for being 9 days post-op.  You have also indicated that you bruise easily, which explains your presentation.  Please allow more time as you will note the swelling will come down. Keep in mind that during this post-operative period it is imperative that you avoid heavy lifting and over-activity as this can result in delayed healing. You may want to consider homeopathic natural remedies such as Arnica and Bromelain in which anti-inflammatory and anti-bruising properties may be of benefit to you.  Please discuss this with your plastic surgeon. Thank you for your question.  Your photographs indicate that you do, in fact, have significant bruising.  That being said, you are early in the healing process and bruising and swelling will subside as healing progresses.  Best to continue to follow the specific instructions given to you by your plastic surgeon.  Good luck.

JG503.  I appreciate your concern, however postoperative bruising at this stage of your recovery is not uncommon and it is not related to capsular contracture. Try to stay patient and follow up with your plastic surgeon. Good luck.

Dear JG503,bruising can occur after surgery. Capsular contracture happens. In fact, every implant has a capsule form around it, its just a certain percentage develop thick capsules. There is a lot we don't know about it actually. Some think that bacteria that gets on the implant during insertion can increase the risk. Thats why we use a Keller Funnel in our practice to reduce that possibility. Our capsular contracture rate is less than 2% because we use a keller funnel as well as meticulous operating room techniques.Daniel Barrett, MD

Severe bruising is not common and it is too early in your healing to tell if this will develop into capsular contracture. Dear JG503,Significant bruising 9 days after a breast augmentation surgery is not uncommon.  Try not to confuse hematoma with bruising.  Hematoma, or bleeding within the space that the implant occupies can cause severe bruising and contribute to capsular contracture, but there would be other signs and symptoms such as severe pain, severe swelling and a large discrepancy in breast size.  Bruising without hematoma occurs within the tissues and is not contributory to CC.  Good luck with the remainder of your recovery!

You have more bruising than most women I see at a week out and your ongoing pain is of some concern.  Follow up with your plastic surgeon who can provide you with assurance if all is well.  While bleeding inside your implant pocket or a hematoma may lead to capsular contracture, a bruise alone is within the skin and will not progress to this complication.  Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thank you for your question. It is normal to have some bruising after breast augmentation. It does appear that you have slightly more than usual but its not abnormal. Monitor for any signs of increasing swelling or increasing pain. These may be a sign of hematoma which could potentially warrant an intervention.

There is really no normal when it comes to bruising and capsular contracture. some patients bruise, while others do not. there are many factors which can contribute to bruising. The dame holds true for capsular contracture. I recommend sharing your concerns with your doc and following his/her instructions

Hi- Yes bruising can happen after augmentation. Continue to follow up with your plastic surgeon and follow their post operative instructions. Capsular contracture is very rare and you are not at an increased risk from bruising. Hope you love you’re result!
