There is a lot of confusing information out there about microneedling and growth factors. Up until recently, there were very few growth factor products available from human skin cell sources. On the contrary, there are many growth factors (also called stem cell products in drug and department stores) that come from plants, fruits and other botanicals. I use a human growth factor product line that is so pure it can be needled into a freshly ablated face or poured onto a wound. The purpose of the needles is to create controlled "trauma" to the skin which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin...the proteins that contribute to a youthful, plump, firm and smooth complexion. The growth factors are like messengers to your skin cells...causing them to go into repair mode which improves the color, texture, fine lines and inflammation of the skin. The latter is why microneedling with growth factors is so highly effective for conditions like acne. Consider microneedling like making microscopic holes in the skin or "aerating your lawn" and growth factors like pouring the perfect fertilizer down the hole. Can microneedling be done without growth factors? Yes, absolutely it can, but it is a much more effective procedure doing them together. Hope this information can be helpful to you. Dr. Schneider
