Hi, I have lost most of my hair on the crown of my head, and would like to get a permanent solution like a Hair Transplant using FUE. My donot area is still quite dense and healthy. I do not want to shave my head for the transplant. How effective is the transplant if done without shaving the head or trimming it to a stubble?
Answer: Is a "non-shaven" follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant effective? Dear aroravineet, Thank you for posting this question. A “non-shaven” FUE is just as effective as a traditional shaven FUE. The only difference is in the amount of follicles that can be harvested. With the non-shaven FUE, up to 1,200-1,400 follicles can be extracted, and that looks like it will be about the right amount for your crown area. I have attached a video that goes over how this works. Again, the difference is only in the number of grafts that can be harvested; the growth in the recipient area is the same no matter if the hair is fully trimmed or not. I hope this information is helpful to you. Kind Regards, Ken Anderson, MD, FISHRS

Answer: FUE without shaving the head FUE can be performed without shaving the head, but in some patients, this will limit the number of grafts that can be taken. I generally tell patients that they will get the best results if they can at least cut their hair fairly short around the time of the transplant. This makes the transplant technically easier for both the donor and recipient areas, resulting in a faster transplant session (which is easier on the patient). There are ways to disguise the donor areas with surrounding hair that is left long, but sometimes this is difficult to make natural in appearance, and again, will often limit the overall number of hairs that can be harvested.Best,

Answer: FUE without shaving FUE can be done without shaving the back of the head.If the hair is long enough a smaller zone of harvest area can be utilized and the longer hair above will cover this until the harvest area fully grows back.Or,multiple areas throughout the donor can be harvested by just trimming some of the hairs in that area. However this does limit the number of grafts that can be obtained to about 1200 or less.

Answer: Surgery without shaving Thanks to some recently developed techniques, and depending on the patient’s condition and suitability for certain techniques, the FUE procedure may be performed without shaving the hair at all. At our clinic, we offer three different FUE methods; FUE with shaven hair in which the hair is shaven in both the donor area and recipient areas, non-shaven FUE where the hair is shaven only in the extracted area and last, but not least the long hair FUE method without shaving the hair at all. In the long hair FUE procedure, the extraction portion of the surgery is executed with a specially designed surgical punch while the insertion or placement of the grafts is performed with the very specially designed KEEP (Koray Erdogan Embedding Placer) which I recently patented. With this method, the maximum number of units that can be transplanted in one surgery is 3000 grafts spread over 2 days of surgery.
