How long do fillers really last?

Question

about 3 weeks ago I had Juvederm injected into my lips. I absolutely loved the way that they looked for the first week. I realize now I probably could have gone a little bit bigger but didn't want to do too much the first time. As I said it's only been 3 weeks and quite honestly I barely see any results now. I am a smoker and I guess I want to know if that affects how long the injections last in general, and realistically if I do get a second injection will this last longer?

Hello, and thank you for the question. In general, filler will last for an average of 6-8 months (sometimes longer depending on the area treated). You were likely experiencing the effect of swelling in the days following your treatment. A touch-up may be necessary if you feel that you would benefit from more volume in the area. Thank you for sharing your question. Depending on the type of filler and the amount used, results can last anywhere from 6-12 months. Considering there is increased movement around the mouth, I tell my patients to expect a 6-month result with lip filler, at which time a touch up may be necessary in order to maintain results. It is possible that your injector wanted to start with a conservative amount of filler to avoid overfilling. While I agree with this approach, often times it is necessary to add more filler at follow up to see visible results. I recommend following up with your injector to discuss your concerns and the potentially add more filler. Best of luck.

The results that you may have seen immediately after was with the swelling that occurs post injection. You can go back for a touch up injection or possibly try a different filler. Consult with an expert injector to determine what type of filler would give you the results you want.

I'm sorry your results have not lasted with Juvederm. You should stop smoking as free radicals and toxins will destroy your looks including injectable products. You should consider an alternative filler (Restylane, Volbella). A filler in the lips should last 6 months or around that long.

There are a lot of variables when it comes to "how long" different Dermal Fillers will last. Every individual is different. Juvederm might last longer on one person than another. Generally Dermal filler can last anywhere from 3-9 months. The first time we say 3-6 months just so there is no disappointment. But the more you top up dermal filler the longer it lasts.

I love doing fillers because it is such an art! 
I have a feeling who ever injector your lips with very conservative and did not put that much. Fillers usually swell very much especially on the lips.  This is why the first week you probably love the results and feel that they have now diminished over time. The simple solution is to have a little bit more injected.
 Most fillers that are used on the lips are hyaluronic acid-based and can last six months or more. Some people have an enzyme that works faster than others and metabolizes and gets rid of the filler faster. However even if you're a fast metabolizer, this is too early to lose the actual filler. My guess is that you've lost swelling.

Thank you very much for your question. The duration of Juvederm depends on the amount injected as well as the area where the Juvederm is placed. In general, Juvederm products last anywhere from 6-12 month. However, given the active movement of the lips, filler in this area tends to not last as long as areas where there is little movement such as the cheeks. All the best.

It all depends. There are different kinds of fillers that last from 6 months to 5 years. Juvederm lasts around 9 months but with some patients it can last longer. Fillers used for lip augmentation usually don’t last longer than 9 months. Especially in the lip movement where there is increased movement, fillers usually last shorter than promised. Touchups are necessarily to maintain results. You can look into implants if you want more permanent results. Good luck!

Thank you for your question. Fillers last on average 6-7 months dependent on the area treated. Smoking will not reduce the longevity of your filler. It sounds like you are wanting a fuller final result and I would suggest talking with your doctor about additional enhancement. From what you have described you likely just need more filler.  The lips tend to swell after injection and that swelling can last up to two weeks.  You probably were enjoying the effect of the filler combined with the swelling.  It is fine to go slowly at first since it is simple to return to have more filler added if desired.  Typically fillers in the lips last 6-9 months.
