Lip fillers when pregnant?

Hi there!Good question. Even though there is no evidence to suggest that fillers can do any harm when pregnant, this is exactly why in best practice, injectables should be avoided. Purely as we are not 100% sure.Certainly avoid any further top ups at the moment and also avoid whist breastfeeding for the same reasons. Best wishes,Dr Rupert

I don't think there would be any problem with augmenting the lips with filler even in the midst of pregnancy. However many doctors are petrified to do anything to a pregnant woman.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  You are correct in that there are no studies confirming safety or harm with the administration of dermal fillers during pregnancy.  As a result the policy of most plastic surgeons is that treatment should be delayed until after delivery as a "better safe than sorry" policy.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for your question, you are absolutely correct that there are no studies. The reason for this is it would be unethical to do a study when the outcome is unknown. It would put the unborn baby at a possible risk. Some fillers do also contain lidocaine in the product. 
As medical practitioners we would not treat anyone pregnant or breast feeding.

Doctors can be blamed if something goes wrong and it is hard for prove its safety on pregnant women therefore we do not prefer to do it. The most important thing for you is to focus on your pregnancy and your baby so I would advise you to continue with Juvederm or any other treatment after you deliver your baby. Good luck!

While it seems intuitive that fillers would pose no risk to mother or developing child, there is simply no data to prove its safety and doctors prefer not to open themselves to a frivolous lawsuit if something happen with the pregnancy. Although not casue by filler, the doctor could be blamed and she/he would have little to defend themselves. Thanks for your question. From a medical-legal point of view, none of us would knowingly use fillers or toxins or lasers on anyone that is pregnant. Of course, people have become pregnant with fillers or Botox on board and there has never been anything seriously reported as a result. But as Dr. Castillo points out, we all prescribe to the better safe than sorry adage and you should not have anything further done until after your baby is born.

Hello kri55i,Thank you for sharing your important question and concerns. From your statement and obvious research what you have been told and discovered is true. It is also true there are many "reports" or anecdotal stories of Botox and or Fillers being done with a pregnancy subsequently being discovered very near to the time of treatment and no significant problems occurring. This however does not constitute reliable scientific data that we as physicians rely upon when making decisions regarding patient care especially in the presence of pregnancy when there are two patients being cared for simultaneously. Obstetricians struggle with these decisions every day with the ultimate decider being the risk vs. benefit to the intervention under consideration. When it comes to something that is purely elective such as we are discussing and no reliable information as to risk (real or potential) available the answer remains NO this should not be done and is considered contraindicated.

There are no studies to determine if this is safe. If something were to happen to the baby, there is nothing the injector can do to defend themselves. It's better to not inject pregnant patients.
